[00:00:20] Lesley: Before we get started, can I just say that well done for getting through that intro because we write the intros. So they had fancy schmancy, visibility, accessibility, efficient, effective. I think you did very well to get through that. I was like, listen to it.

[00:00:37] Poor Ingrid. It's a test of your proficiency in English the whole way through. 

[00:00:41] Ingrid: It was a bit of a tongue twister, I'm not going to lie. Exactly. Exactly. 

[00:00:48] Lesley: So Ingrid, we're here to talk about sensible storage ideas. I'm like, did I write that title sensible? We don't really like to be sensible, do we? But I guess when it comes to storage ideas, sensible is best.

[00:01:01] So we are going to talk about very sensible storage ideas for clothing today. Now everybody wants their wardrobes to look amazing, to look stunning and beautiful like we see on the television. We get bombarded with these fantastic ideas all the time, don't we, on social media? Why don't you buy this? Why don't you buy that?

[00:01:18] So it's a bit of a minefield. It can be really hard to work out what's going to be a good storage solution and what is not. And so today it's all about the sensible, isn't 

[00:01:27] Ingrid: it? I know, boring sensible. Yeah, but it's down to earth and it's what we're all about because we are all about keeping it real, Lesley.

[00:01:37] I mean, we, we know all these Fancy schmancy things are out there, but we know that they hardly ever work. And it all looks beautiful. And these images and these magazines and these social media posts. And we're like rolling our eyes going, yeah, that doesn't work because we are about realism and we are normal down to earth people who are like, stop buying all the fancy stuff.

[00:02:01] And start from the beginning and keep it simple for yourself because all of these things are really hard to keep beautiful and keep tidy and a life gets in the way and then people get disappointed with themselves that they can't have it beautiful all the time. I mean, I don't even have that stuff and I'm quite organised and quite meticulous.

[00:02:21] Lesley: No, I mean, I actually don't have that much stuff at all. We like to keep it simple. You know, it's always interesting because you know, as part of my job, I do a lot of kind of designs of wardrobes and kitchens and things like that. And nine times out of 10, what I do is strip out the, the, the fancy schmancy things that have been created by the wardrobe or kitchen designer and keep it simple.

[00:02:42] You just need shelves, you need hanging rails, you need a few drawers. That is it. You don't need loads and loads of stuff. stuff. Now, while we're talking about hanging rails and drawers, let's talk about what is best hanging or folding your closing grid. 

[00:02:58] Ingrid: I think they're both work well, depending on what it is.

[00:03:02] And depending on how meticulous you are. I mean, I love folding. But I am a meticulous person and I love to do my t shirts exactly the same way. And my underwear exactly the same way. And I've been doing that for many, many years. So I'm quite proficient in folding as well. I mean, the more you do it, the better you get at it.

[00:03:24] I mean, that's with everything, isn't it? But it's, you need to get the knack for it. And then once you get the knack for it, then it's like, Oh, this is really handy. And then it's easy to fold everything the same way. So for me. The difference between hanging and folding is not a lot because I, for me, they both work well and I just go, okay, what is this item?

[00:03:44] Am I going to hang it or fold it? And if it's a folding one, I fold it. If it's a hanging one, I hang it. Not a problem. But I know that some people are absolutely, are just, just, just not precise enough to do the folding and then they kind of haphazardly fold things and then it doesn't look nice. Because it doesn't look nice because they're all folded in different ways and then your drawers look messy 

[00:04:08] Lesley: Now it will come as no surprise, Ingrid, that I am neither proficient nor meticulous when it comes to folding.

[00:04:16] Sometimes I just don't even know how I became a professional organiser because I just fail on so many levels, but I, I am an avid organiser. hangar of things for the reasons that Ingrid has mentioned. I do have a made sure I had lots of hanging space, more so than draw space, because I don't really want to fold.

[00:04:35] I don't want to be and spend my time doing meticulous folding. It's not really me. I just want to be able to find things easily. I want things to be visible. I want things to be accessible. I'm not too worried about things being folded perfectly to me. I'm like better things to do my time than folding. If I've got another option, and that's the thing, I do have another option.

[00:04:57] I have plenty of hanging space and I've done that by design, haven't I? Yeah. So I think it's, I think it's important, but it's important for you to realize if you've got the benefit of choice. So can I choose whether to put more hanging rails in or more drawers in? If you have the benefit of choice, then if you are not as proficient as other people, then perhaps hanging is the way to go.

[00:05:19] Hanging is much more forgiving than folding, 

[00:05:22] Ingrid: isn't it, Ingrid? Well, you know what, Lesley, you touched on something very interesting there. You're like, I think you are an amazing professional organiser. Oh, thank you. Oh, that's nice. But the thing is... You know what your strengths are, and your strength is not folding, or maybe you know what your weakness is, and one of the things you don't do well is folding.

[00:05:47] So you've thought, okay. How can I, what can I do to make sure I don't have to fold a lot of stuff and I have more hanging space? So you've thought about that situation and you've then concluded, okay, I need less shelves. I need less drawers, but I need more hanging space. And I think that's what makes you a good professional organiser because you're working with your personality and in your house, what your options are.

[00:06:12] And I think that's where it starts. A lot of people, they think. Okay, then I see all these beautiful shelves and I see these drawers and with the meticulous, possibly Marie Kondo folded... Things, but then they even realize themselves. Actually, I don't really like folding. I'm not very good at it. So why am I trying to do something that makes no sense to me?

[00:06:32] You're 

[00:06:32] Lesley: absolutely right. It's about working towards your strengths. And I do have to add a caveat in here, Ingrid, that I do, I can fold and I do fold for clients. I think I'm going to do myself out of a job here. Everyone's gone. We're not having the clutter fairies in because Lesley can't fold. I actually can fold, but I choose not to do it as often.

[00:06:51] I'll gladly do it for clients, but I don't really do it for myself because I've got lots of hanging space. I think it's really important, as Ingrid says, to work to your strengths. Think about it. A lot of people just do what they've always done. If your mum always folded lots of stuff when you were growing up, then the chances are you're going to think automatically that's the right way and you're going to carry that through into your own life.

[00:07:14] If you've got a choice and you've got an option, you're putting new wardrobes in, you've got an opportunity to buy more, more wardrobes or configure it in a certain way. Think about, do you know what? Actually putting things on a hanger is a lot more forgiving. Why don't I do that? Rather than make myself fall when I don't want to do that.

[00:07:29] So hanging and folding is the first thing, the first sensible storage idea that we're going to talk about. And it's very basic. Are you going to hang? Are you going to fold? Decide. 

[00:07:39] Ingrid: Yeah. Yeah. And of course, the next level in that is then as well, if you do decide, okay, or if you, if you have to work with what space you have, and you have to have drawers or you have to have shelves, then you think, need to think about, okay, so what then am I hanging?

[00:07:55] And what am I folding? What makes sense to me? I mean, some people are like, you know what? I, it doesn't matter, you know, folding, I'm going to keep it simple, but pajamas don't have to be meticulously folded, but you need to have a place and a drawers. Yes. Where you can put your pajamas in maybe the same with swimwear, but you're like, Oh yeah, I can't even be bothered hanging that.

[00:08:15] It's a completely drawer thing, but I'm not going to worry about folding it all beautifully. I'm just going to chuck it in with the other swimwear as long as it's together. So you start to think about categories, et cetera, a lot more. 

[00:08:27] Lesley: Yes. And so, um, you're absolutely right. Decide what you're going to hang, decide what you're going to fold, and then you need the right equipment to be able to do that.

[00:08:33] Well, don't So, um, we love. a uniform hanger, don't we? So we are big fans of velvet hangers for this reason. We love velvet hangers because they are thin, they are streamlined, they are non slip and so things typically don't slip. Now that can come at a price as well, they're non slip, they can be quite awkward to work with with certain types of fabrics.

[00:09:00] So a velvet hanger is not always perfect. But it is a good all rounder. And if you are compromised on space, and you have very little space in your wardrobe, a velvet hanger for us is the way to go. You can have velvet hangers in any colour you want. They're quite cost effective. You don't have to pay an arm and a leg, but you need to get good quality.

[00:09:19] So we do want to throw that into the mix. There's a lot of very cheap velvet hangers out there on the market. But honestly, if you have a mishmash of hangers in your wardrobe, a bit of wire, a bit of wood, a bit of metal, a bit of plastic, it kind of looks a little bit messy. They're all different sizes, your clothes hang at different levels.

[00:09:36] If you want to change your wardrobe hugely, aesthetically and practically, then a velvet hanger is a great investment, isn't it Ingrid? Oh, 

[00:09:45] Ingrid: couldn't agree more. I mean, I... Even before you and I started the Declutter Hub together and we started talking about hangers and all of these things, I already had velvet hangers.

[00:09:54] So, it's, it's been an absolutely game changer for me and I think it looks so much nicer for actually relatively a low investment. So, it, it's just, it's a great way to have more uniformity in your clothing. It's, it's just nicer to see. And when you have shop hangers, they're always, you know, they're Always are different.

[00:10:18] I don't know why there's, there's not one, but with a velvet hanger, if you kind of commit to one kind of type, you can get them a different colors for me. I've got them a different color. So for me, it doesn't matter, but I like the fact that all the same, and it just looks really nice. So it's a very fantastic way, especially if you're thinking to yourself, Oh, but I'm in a rented property.

[00:10:38] So I can't add in shelves and I can't do all these things. And hanger is a fantastic way to. upgrade the look of your wardrobe. 

[00:10:47] Lesley: Yes. And there are instances, of course. So we love it. We love a velvet hanger. You know, there's no secrets to anybody who's been listening for a while that we are a big advocate of a velvet hanger, but there are some clothing items that don't work well with a velvet hanger.

[00:11:02] Yeah. There's another couple of hangers that we like for different reasons. Uh, so we're going to talk about a wooden hangers, and then we're going to talk about what we call. Clip hangers. I don't even know what the actual correct terminology, but those hangers have got clips on them. They called clip hangers.

[00:11:17] Yeah. Would you say so? Yeah. We don't know. We don't know. Do we really? Do we know what 

[00:11:20] Ingrid: they're called? ? Yeah. I'm, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not very much a skirt person, Lesley. So I , I 

[00:11:27] Lesley: don't clip hangers or clippy hangers or, I don't know. Clip on hangers. Yeah. 

[00:11:33] Ingrid: Definitely something to do with a clip. Yeah. Yeah. 

[00:11:36] Lesley: So let's talk wooden hangers first.

[00:11:38] When would you use a wooden hanger and when are they a good thing to use? 

[00:11:41] Ingrid: Uh, for me, definitely when, um, it is a heavier item, so a coat or, uh, something that's kind of that and, and, and for jackets and things like that. So if you've got like a trouser suit, or if you've got a skirt and a, and a, and a nice.

[00:11:57] Jacket to go with it. That is when I would choose a wooden hanger because she just needs a little bit of more. Almost like body in the, in the hanger to have the item of clothing hang properly. Yeah, because they've got big 

[00:12:10] Lesley: shoulders. So that, you know, it's something that's got a wider shoulder that's more formed that you need a bulkier hanger so that it sits right on your hanger.

[00:12:18] So that's why wooden hangers are really good. Now wooden hangers are beautiful, if you have got tons and tons of space and so Whilst we love a velvet hanger, if you have got a Kim Kardashian style wardrobe, go for a wooden hanger because they are beautiful and they keep your clothes so nice and so well formed.

[00:12:36] But most of us have not got that space and so we need to compromise and that's why the velvet hanger comes in because they're very space saving. Now, we cannot use either a wooden hanger or a velvet hanger. on skirts on certain other items. And that is where a clippy clip on clip hanger.

[00:12:57] Ingrid: Yes, definitely. And sometimes you've got also wooden hangers with clips. So that helps as well if you can, this all comes like a two in one. Especially if you've got a suit with a, with a matching trouser or matching skirt. That's where the clips can be really, really helpful to use. Like I said, I have hardly any, any skirts.

[00:13:17] I think I can actually have none. I think actually. I do have a couple of dresses, but skirts, I think zero. So I hardly have any, uh, clippy clips.

[00:13:29] I want to 

[00:13:30] Lesley: talk about, and really sometimes we should really look before we record the podcast what the actual terminology is. That would be helpful, wouldn't it? You think we would know after 12 years of being organisers what the name of those hangers were, but we don't just make stuff up as we go along.

[00:13:45] Um, I think you talked actually about wooden hangers with clips on. I think there's a couple of things that I wanted to talk about. When you are using a clip hanger, it's quite important to use one that is straight at the top and not like a normal kind of curved hanger. So you can actually buy clips for our standard velvet hangers as well.

[00:14:04] But what happens then is that the skirt sits much lower in the wardrobe and tends to trail on the bottom. So the best kind of clip hangers are the ones that are straight. And so they, they sit up close to that rail. It's hard to Do you know, I mean, you know, you don't have those standard hanger shape.

[00:14:21] They're just straight across with two clips. And it's really good as well. If you can get the clips that move along a little bit, that I've got a little bit of flexibility in them. The ones that I prefer are indeed wooden, but they're not the standard wooden shape. They are straight wooden hangers with clips that move along the hanger.

[00:14:38] So it's important to get the right type of clip hanger as well. Now,

[00:15:51] Lesley: Okay. Welcome back, everybody. So we've talked a lot about hanging and now we are going to talk about folding and drawers. I feel like I just need to let you do the second half of the podcast because I'm so lacking in proficiency in these matters as we have already established, but I do actually fold some things, even though I don't fold much and I do quite like a drawer divider.

[00:16:14] So let's talk drawer dividers, 

[00:16:16] Ingrid: Ingrid. Yes, well, drawer dividers, I think, come in all shapes and sizes, but let's first establish where we use them. So, if you've got a lot of drawers, and the drawers need to hold a lot of different categories, for example, in one, you have one very large drawer, or two or three very large drawers, and they need to hold socks, and underwear, and bras, and tights, and swimwear, and sportswear, and...

[00:16:47] Lots of different categories. What you don't want to do is have them in one large drawer, all kind of moving about a bit. That is when you need to think to yourself, okay, I need to put some drawer dividers in so I can divide this drawer in smaller containers. Now, these draw dividers can be. Plastic can be fabric.

[00:17:12] You can buy the cup. Uh, I think it's called copies, knit from Ikea where you scub, scub, and it's like, it has like a zip and you can kind of zip them open and they become beautifully square little, um, um, containers that you can put in drawers. They're brilliant. I mean, absolutely brilliant. But so you need to think about what do I need to store in this drawer and have I got a lot of small loose stuff that can start to fly all over the place and then things get muddled and then you start to lose stuff.

[00:17:43] Yes, a 

[00:17:43] Lesley: drawer divider allows us to do our favorite thing in which is containerization, isn't it? We love to containerize. So I do indeed have wide drawers and in those drawers, so in my top drawer, I've got bras,

[00:18:02] pants, and that's it I think, and then I've got socks and tights in one, then I've got scarves and belts in one, and bikinis and pyjamas in one, that kind of thing, so I need to divide these drawers up. So I actually use plastic drawer dividers that are kind of expandable. And they, they just go straight from back to front.

[00:18:19] So I've got quite big draw dividers, I've not got little sections. I've got quite big sections because that's the way that I want to do it. And so you really need to think about what size of draw divider you want, what sorts of things are you going to put in the, are you going to put little things like pants and socks and so on?

[00:18:35] How many are going in there? So don't go too small on your draw dividers because that doesn't work either, 

[00:18:39] Ingrid: does it? Correct. Correct. And what, I mean, if you're like, okay, I don't have to budget Ingrid and Lesley to buy any drawer dividers. Empty shoe boxes are a perfect drawer divider. I mean, both, both the lid and the box itself you can use, but of course, especially the box itself works really well because it's normally the same height as a drawer.

[00:19:00] So it doesn't have to be always a super expensive solution. 

[00:19:05] Lesley: Yes, so draw dividers are a fantastic thing to have in your drawers to keep things containerized. Now, a lot of us don't have, well we do, we have a bit of hanging space, we have a bit of drawer space, and then we have shelves, don't we? And so what do we do with those pesky shelves Ingrid?

[00:19:22] Because they go all the way to the ceiling. the ceiling, they're a bit awkward. They go all the way back. We shove stuff in, we can't see what's at the back. How do we fix that? 

[00:19:31] Ingrid: I know, you know what, Lesley? It's like, we're always like, use the height, use the height of, of, of, of rooms. So that means we then create wardrobes, et cetera.

[00:19:42] All the way to the ceiling, but then of course we create this space on the top And we need to have nearly a ladder or a stepstool or something to be able to reach the top And exactly what you say normally wardrobes are about 90 centimeters depth or something. So it's like it's When you have to reach for something, it's like, it's all the way in the back.

[00:20:02] And I'm like, if you're watching this on YouTube, I'm like waving with my arm, trying to demonstrate how that looks. If you're listening in the car, you don't see me doing this unless he knows exactly what I'm doing, but I'm, I'm now waving my hand, trying to reach something from the top drawer. 

[00:20:18] Lesley: Very visually appealing English.

[00:20:19] Yeah. And so the way that we can fix that problem is that we can almost put containers, which we love. into those shelves, which we can then lift down. And so it's all about finding a box or a container that you can put into a shelf, which almost makes it become a drawer because we can lift it down, which is the equivalent of opening up the drawer.

[00:20:43] So we have containerized items within that, and it can be all the way from the top shelf or all the way to the bottom shelf. Now, because as you know, I don't really like. Folding that much. Um, if I do like folding, I like to fold vertically and I will regularly fold vertically what we call filing then into a box, which I will then lift out and I can find exactly what I need.

[00:21:04] So boxes and the right size of box used in shelves can be an absolute game changer as well, can't it Ingrid? 

[00:21:11] Ingrid: Yes, definitely. And I would have to say maximize the space. So if you've got a wide shelf on the top of your wardrobe, or sorry, yeah, wide shelf, don't try to put in one gigantic box. Because the thing is, then it gets too heavy to almost try and lift down.

[00:21:31] You then need to go to two or three smaller boxes. So you will have to do a little bit of measuring and be smart about this. Now, okay. I personally don't like a, um, uh, kind of, uh, a fabric or a, especially a, um, rattan or wicker. 

[00:21:49] Lesley: I knew you were going to, I knew you rattan. She's going to say rattan. She's going to literally say rattan.

[00:21:54] What is it about you? 

[00:21:57] Ingrid: Yeah, I don't, I don't, I don't like them. I 

[00:22:00] Lesley: don't like them. I'm like, she's surely she's not going to say rattan. I mean, no one has rattan stuff in their wardrobes anyway, do they? 

[00:22:08] Ingrid: Well, I really want to convince people to even not go there. And if they do just swap them around, get some nice.

[00:22:15] It's hard plastic boxes or crates or something like that, even if you have a temporary solution and you're using, I don't know, an Amazon and the Amazon box or something while you're trying to organise yourself, then upgrade that to something that's a little bit more long lasting and you will get so much benefit.

[00:22:34] I think that also one of my promises, you can't really label return very properly. So the label falls off. So when you go to it. Plastic books and I really, really like the ones that the white hard plastic ones from Ikea. I think they're amazing. Um, you can label them beautifully as well, so it works really, really well.

[00:22:50] You can buy them with or without a lid, which is another bonus in my opinion. 

[00:22:55] Lesley: You know what talking about here, actually they have fantastic solutions for insides of wardrobes, and many of us around the country around the world in fact have got the packs wardrobe system already in place, a lot of us have got an IKEA wardrobe in our homes.

[00:23:08] They have an equivalent of the kind of Good boxers. They have a big wide one that you can put on the top of wardrobes, which are really lightweight that you can, that you can lift down. And that's the kind of thing you can put blankets and pillows and all those kinds of things. And so if you need a storage solution for a wardrobe and Ikea is definitely going to provide you with that.

[00:23:26] And the nice thing about Ikea is they focus on. Um, form and function. They do both really, really well as they make sure things are lightweight. They make sure things are cost effective and that they also look good as well. So you can't go far wrong with Ikea. I mean, it's a, it's a big job sometimes to go to an Ikea.

[00:23:45] It involves quite a lot of effort. It involves the possibility of you spending hundreds more pounds on things that you absolutely don't need as well. So you have to try and avoid that. Um, but Ikea is a fantastic place for any kind of storage solution. They really have got it right. When it comes to Small spaces and maximizing space.

[00:24:01] So you don't go far wrong with Ikea. Yeah, definitely. 

[00:24:05] Ingrid: I think, um, Curver also have got a really nice, a beautiful new range with kind of a knitted kind of pattern. So they are plastic, but they look like it's, it's knitwear. It looks really nice. It looks like 

[00:24:18] Lesley: rattan is what it looks like. 

[00:24:21] Ingrid: Yeah, no, no, no. It's different.

[00:24:23] It's different, but it looks really nice. So, um, yeah, I've, I've seen that, um, it's quite a, kind of a new range they have and, um, it looks great. It looks great. 

[00:24:33] Lesley: And just make sure you measure your boxes. That's it. Measure your spaces to make sure you get the right size boxes. That's the most important thing, isn't it?

[00:24:38] Yeah. 

[00:24:39] Ingrid: And don't only forget to measure, um, kind of the, the, the width. But also the height, especially if you're going to get some storage boxes to go inside drawers. Don't forget to measure the height and really make kind of good notes for yourself. So you actually know and you can kind of, not when you're in the store and go, did I actually measure that?

[00:24:58] Was that the inside now or the outside? Or was that the height or not? Or did I also measure the shelf itself? And you get all confused because it's really, sometimes it's really almost, it's centimeter work to make sure that it fits. 

[00:25:13] Lesley: Yeah, exactly. And there's nothing more satisfying than your, than your containers fitting into your drawer is that?

[00:25:17] So truly honest. So what you'll see from what we, we, we promised sensible storage solutions for a wardrobe at the beginning of this podcast, and they are sensible and they are simple. We literally do not need that much. We need to work with the space that we've got. We need to make sure we've got the right hangers.

[00:25:32] We need to incorporate some drawer devices if that is sensible. And we need to put boxes into our shelves to make them function as if they were a drawer. So they are simple solution. They are sensible solutions. They're not going to cost you an arm and a leg. And we think they can completely transform the way your wardrobe functions 

[00:25:51] Ingrid: for you.

I’ve heard this podcast many times and on the first ever challenge I did implemented the velvet hangers. So much more space! And when I moved to the house (hoping to move back in soon again) I put drawers in the small shelf and I asked for them to have a divider even tho such small drawers wouldn’t normally get such small dividers. Been very useful not so good for jumpers /sweaters/winter hoodies as 2 fill the space ( hmm might have too many!)
