Well, Lesley, let's be honest with each other here, we are so used to being everything quick these days that we really think that you can decluttering is quick, and we can do it quickly, right? Because everything now is quick, right? You click on something on a button, and boom, next day it's at your house. You see something in the shops are aligned, click, click, and boom, it appears at your house. You go to the shops, and everything is there. But we have to realize that some things are just not quick, and we sound a bit like the bringer some bad news sometimes, don't we? I think anybody who's listened into it, into us for a while knows that we kind of know we we talk about slow, manageable chunks. We talk about, you know, sometimes you can get the best results by being a tortoise, not a hair and things like that. So we're big advocates of taking it easy and not going hell for leather and stuff. But I think what we wanted to talk about today really was, was about how you can put a little bit of extra time in now and it's really going to reap dividends later. That's what we wanted to talk about now in our reset your home book that came out in February or came out in June, if you're in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, then every chapter that we've got has a little quote at the top of it. And one of our favorite quotes, which we love, is your future self. Well, thank you for it. And so we decided to do, going to do a little series coming up over the next few months, aren't we? Where we take a little quote from the book, and so I basically explain a little bit more about it. So we're going to talk through certain things that we think that you need to do, put that extra little bit of effort in now that are really going to pay off in the future. So let's get cracking Ingrid. Yes, let's start with kind of, well, it's almost 10 things, but it isn't really, is it? Lesley, but let's start with number one. It's really important to do some planning before you get started with decluttering. Oh my gosh, so important. The thing we want to do is like, right? We're ready, we're geared up. Let's dive in this cupboard. Let's dive in this wardrobe. I am coming for you. This is the weekend of all weekends when it's going to happen. And we actually really get started without a plan in place. We haven't even thought about our big picture goal, the big why we're doing this. We haven't thought about our steps. We haven't broken it down. We haven't realized why we want to do this decluttering, why it's so important. We just dive in, no plan, nothing. And then it all crumbles down really quickly, right? And we get overwhelmed, and we feel distraught, and we think, why was this? Why was I doing this in the first place? I think making a plan, and sounds like a plan for decluttering, really, but oh my gosh, that will definitely re benefit so much, so much. Yeah, it's so important. How.

A plan, and to just give yourself that kind of 1520 minutes at the beginning of a session to really think through all the things that you spoke about. You know, your goals being the main one. Also going into, you know, lead that into some preparation, some basic preparation of yourself. You know, get yourself in the right head space, get your body right, get the right clothes on. Make sure you've got layers on if you're going out into the garage, make sure you've got plenty of time. You know, people are not going to disturb you all of those kind of things. And importantly, make sure you've got the right kind of equipment to enable you to do the job. You know, to make sure you've got your ladder. If you need a ladder, make sure you've got the right amount of bin bags. Make sure you've got adequate, adequate, adequate cleaning supplies and stuff, hot water and all those kind of things. Make sure you've got a car to take your stuff away at the end of the day, and you're not like, Oh, I forgot. Actually, you know, my husband's taking the car today, and I can't do that. Or make sure you've got somebody that can help you on the weekend to take the stuff to charity shop. Make sure you've got a room that you can put some stuff in as a holding area if necessary. You need to think about all these things, because these are the kind of things that you go into a project. You start without thinking about them, and then all of a sudden you become stuck, and it becomes too hard, and you stop. And that's what we're trying to avoid, isn't it? We're trying to avoid that kind of stall inside of it. So if you preempt these problems that may happen, or preempt some of the things that you need to think about, then it's going to make it so much easier. So just a little bit of effort at the beginning really does reap those rewards. Yeah, absolutely. Another thing I think that can be super helpful is to take some before pictures. So if you're going to work on a certain room, an area, a drawer, a cupboard, a wardrobe, snap a picture. It is so easily forgotten, and I know a lot of people think, but I don't want to see the stuff. I don't want to see later how bad it was. I don't want to see the chaos that was in this room. But it can be super helpful if you later take that after picture. So you can really see in the before and after picture of your own hard work, and you see why you're doing this. It's an amazing motivator, and we see it here in the membership all the time that our members, or people who are new into our membership, say, Oh no, no, I didn't take before pictures. I really regret it now. I wish I would have done that, because we forget how clotted it is. We forget how hard we worked. We are so tuned into thinking of all the things we haven't done, instead of appreciating, being kind to ourselves and going, actually, wow, I'm not there yet, but look at the difference already and before. Pictures can be super helpful to have this positive mindset change. No, it's interesting because we're in the membership, you know, talks about the membership there, what we what we urge people to do before every decluttering project that they do is we have something called ponder your projects, which is exactly about what we've spoken about, which is think about your big picture goals, but it's also about thinking about how you feel about something. What does it make you feel like when you walk into that room? And so, so sometimes it's not just about pictures. It's about feelings and being able to chronicle those feelings on a piece of paper in a notebook, whatever is also going to be very, very motivating later. You know, it's just, it's, you know, it's interesting, because we've done a lot of kind of sorting out of, you know, technical stuff, haven't we in the membership later? And a lot of that has meant that we've gone back, you know, we started this membership in the podcast seven years ago. Now, we can't believe it, and we're going back to some of the stuff that we did in the early days, and to try and basically declutter it, I think most of it, but it's really interesting to see, isn't it, Ingrid, how far we've come in terms of what we did then and what we do what we do now. And sometimes you just need that little boost to go, wow. That was the way we used to do it, and now we're doing so much more. You know, it's really, you know? It allows you to appreciate your own work, and I think that, but you can be forgiven for just wanting to jump in and get the results straight away, because it's something that you want to put behind you, but once it is behind you, being able to look back and see that progress is the very thing that motivates you forward, because otherwise you just forget. You forget that you did it all. That's the thing. So we're big, big advocates of before pictures and writing down your feelings and your thoughts about the project that's upcoming. Absolutely, I mean, game changer, absolutely.

Another thing that's really important in your decluttering journey is establishing your exit plan so you haven't even decluttered yet, but we want you to already think about where the stuff is going to go. Is this going to be donated to a charity shop? Are you going to list some of your items on a free giveaway app, and which app is this going to be? Do you find.

Do you know that there's some stuff in this room that you borrowed from a friend and that has to be returned? Do you know that there are hand me downs you want to possibly hand on to the next person? And are they actually aware? And do they actually want this? All of these things need to be thought about in advance. Because what we know from experience Lesley and I is that the exit plan is one of the most which sounds actually really crazy, but it's one of the steps that gets missed most. So people go off. They all merry way decluttering, they're organizing, they're all of it. And then it gets put in bags and it gets left in a hallway, in another room, in the garage, in a basement, because there's no exit plan for the stuff to leave. So the stuff doesn't leave your house. It actually stays in your house, somewhere else, so it's just being churned so an exit plan is crucial, especially in the beginning days of your decluttering journey, because the volumes will be higher, probably later on down the road, when you start to get your house under control and the cluttering becomes more of a maintenance than a I need to do massive projects to get this all back on track. A donation station replaces that exit plan, because if you've only got a few little bits, you're not going to drive with two or three things across town to donate it, but you can create a donation station where you can put them in, and then once every couple of weeks, you bag it all up, and off you go. But an exit plan, whether it's an that day exit plan, or the next day or donation station, needs to be thought of, because it can be a massive barrier, and definitely your future self. Well, thank you for this, if you've sorted this out before. Absolutely. I think, you know, it's interesting really, because when we work as the clutter fairy, one to one in people's homes, I mean, obviously we do a lot of that for people, and it's the most impactful, arguably the most impactful part of the process is getting the stuff out the door right. And it is like, as you say some it's something where people stall. And so it's something that we definitely try and do, because we don't want that stuff to be left in the home. And so either we can take it certain things, we take stuff to charity, but we definitely talk about to the client before we've even started that project, where's this stuff going to go? Because we know that if we do, if the clients and us collaboratively work together and have a successful decluttering project, it can be 1015, 20 bags of stuff that needs to go, right? And so where's that going to go? It kind of sit in your hallway. Can't just sit in your back of your car like you say. It needs to go somewhere. So to get it out, is the bit that kind of allows you to kind of breathe more easily, doesn't it? Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely. Lesley, and I think I see that the same thing with organize your house as well. When I tell clients, we take away the stuff for you, they're like, oh, oh, that's nice, because they hadn't even thought about it yet. So, yeah, very, very, very impactful. And I think one of the other things that I wanted to talk about, actually, Ingrid was, you know, we talked about getting your equipment ready and in the preparation side of it. So really have a think through about how your room or the area that you're tackling looks and whether or not you're going to need anything additional to temporarily gather like with like, like, we talk a lot in this podcast about gathering like with like, getting similar items together, which allows you then the opportunity to look at the volumes of stuff that you've got, for example. So for some people, that's an integral part of the process, to see, to be confronted by the amount of stuff that you've got, which allows you then to make a decision on it. And it might be that in order to facilitate this, you might need some collapsible crates, for example, that you can put stuff into, sort into, it doesn't necessarily, I mean, I I'm a lover of collapsible crates, because they stack, because they can be broken down after you've used them. They can go vertically. All of those things are really super helpful. This can be bigger bags for life. It can be cardboard boxes. It can be anything really, but it's useful to be able to containerize things. So think about how your messy middle is going to look. So so there's always, you know, it kind of gets worse before it gets better. How are you going to contain that so that it doesn't become overwhelming? So think about the overwhelm that may ensue. Think about the way that you've done declutter in the past and try and prepare well. So that doesn't happen, of course, as professional organizers, that's what we do. We try and manage the process nicely so that it feels more controlled. And we're going to urge you to do that, so put the time and the effort in before gather some things that are going to help you along the way, and all of a sudden it's just going to feel that much calmer, isn't it? Ingrid, yeah, I think absolutely. And I think it can be really, really helpful, because once you've got crates or boxes in place, you can also label them or put notes on them, or put stickers on them, or anything like that to help you remember, because some rooms are quite full that.

Have to work through. So you might not able to do this in three hours or four hours, you might go, Okay, I'm going to make a start, and I'm going to have to come back and having things in different storage containers and with labels on them, you will go, oh yeah, that was the books where I was going to put blah blah blah in. And that was the books for that item. So you can kind of pick up much easier, where you've left off, instead of having to think like, oh, and reinvent the whole wheel again and go, where was I up to? What did I do? And labels and boxes can really help with that. There's one more thing that I want to talk about. So the stuff that we're talking about at the moment really is the kind of the things, the sort of time intensive things that you do kind of before, at the beginning of a decluttering project. So one more thing that I want to talk about after the break. We're going to talk about more like day to day, daily resets and things like that. But I want to talk about giving yourself an opportunity to have a break. Because if you have a break for five or 10 minutes in the big of a decluttering session, your future self will thank you for it, even though you feel that you're in that kind of hyper focused mode, which many of us are, when we start to get into decluttering, we just never stop. But give yourself that breather in the middle, honestly, that 10 minute break for a cup of tea is going to really reap rewards in the long run Ingrid, and I always do it. You know, we typically work five hours when we're working with clients, each of us will always have that break in the middle for 1520 minutes, just so you can reset and refresh, because you don't know how exhausted you are getting while you're doing that, and you just need that mental switch off. So do don't think that you're losing time by having a break. You know, have a break, have a cup of tea, have a sit down, but make sure you put that timer on and get back to it after 15 minutes. Really, really important. You know, it's good that and so things like that are really going to your future self. Well, thank you for having had a break. Because if you then do eight hours over a weekend, eight hours on a Saturday, eight hours on a Sunday, honestly, you will feel so exhausted by that whole process that you won't come back to decluttering for another six or eight months. And so if you by breaking it down into manageable chunks, by recognizing your own energy levels and things like that, by recognizing the fact that you need to have a break, it means that you can break things down a little bit more and you think, Oh, that wasn't too bad. You're going to come back and do more next week. So you know, do take breaks? Really, really important. Well, talking about taking breaks, let's have a break and we'll see you afterwards. if we have a minute cup of tea. Well, we did our own energy levels. Well, I think after this podcast, we're going to definitely have a cup of tea, because we're now in the flow of things, and we want to keep going, obviously, but yeah, I think it's so important to be kind to yourself and doing these things can do your future self a favor. And I think it's so important, because decluttering is often seen as something negative and something hard, and what we've what our kind of, well, our mission is to say to people, but the cluttering can be really fun, but you have to kind of think things through a little bit before you kind of dive in, because then it will become easier. Over time, it will. You will love it more. And we see it with with with our members who follow our system, they starting to love decluttering, don't they? They start to see the benefits of following our tips and advice. And I think you know what's not to like about that. I know. I mean, many would argue Ingrid, but we will

stick to our mantra that decluttering is fun. I think one of the things that we wanted to talk about as well is so about it. We've talked a lot about what you do at the beginning of a decluttering session. We want to talk a little bit more about what you do after a decluttering session, and when you're into maintenance mode, almost. So I think it's really important for you to make sure that you get finished. You know, we talked about an exit plan. That's definitely part of the process, but spend the time to label and organize and zone really effectively. So, you know, labels, some people love labeling, but it can be a bit of a faff as well, because bit fiddly. Takes a lot of time. It's almost like a whole project on its own sometimes, isn't it, but those labels on boxes or shelves or drawers or inside of drawers, or wherever you want to put a label is going to be super helpful to you in order to maintain the systems that you've created through your decluttering project, right? And so go to that nth degree, put the time in now, so you got it's easy for everybody. And what that means is that that system is available for everybody in the family to help, and not just you by putting a label on. No one's got an excuse. You've not got that. Well, I didn't know where it was going to go, so I just put it on the end of the work surface, or I just put it on in the loft patch for.

Because I just, I just put it in there, and because I don't know where it goes. Well, you know, if ever done a label on it, then everybody would know where it went. And so spend the time putting the labels on and your future self will thank you for it absolutely. Now, when we then, we've, we've, we've started our decluttering, we've done lots of work around our houses, but of course, we have to start doing things daily to stay on top of it. And we call them, as you probably know, if you listening in for a while, we call these our daily resets. And boy, oh boy, do you help your future self when you do your daily resets, especially the ones in the evening, after dinner, you know, doing the washing up, filling the dishwasher, turning it on, wiping those kitchen counters, emptying the recycling, tidying up the living room before you go to bed, by putting the cushions back and the remotes back in the place when you've been watching telly and all of these things, oh, you wake up To just a tidy your house, and that feeling is honestly the best, and it really is a game changer for so many of our listeners, Facebook group members, our members, in our membership, the daily resets are so key on. Dear Lesley, I think in terms of doing your future self a favor, if that was our quote, really, that's kind of this podcast is all hinged around, really, this is arguably the most important one, right? So if you do one thing, then this is going to be it. You know, it's really, really, we can get away without labels. We could get away without preparation if we wanted to, but we cannot get away without daily resets. We have to do daily resets, otherwise our house will just go back to square one all of the time. So the other ones that we spoke about just make things that little bit easier for yourself. They have a little bit more longevity in them. This one is an absolute, non negotiable. You have to do daily resets. You know, if you do your daily resets meticulously, you may not have to do weekly resets, but most people have to do a weekly reset as well. So you do kind of a bigger one, where you tighten up a little bit more. So important, you know, to give yourself and the kind of your future self will thank you for it. It's really about waking up in a positive frame of mind. I mean, now I don't know whether anybody has listened, but we did a podcast with a lovely lady lady called Marianne Slater, back in the day, it's probably like three years ago now, isn't it? England, it feels like yesterday was probably three three years ago. Um, where she's got a floral studio, and she definitely spoke about doing her future self a favor, because what she did was made sure at the end of every day. And can imagine how messy like a floral studio gets with all of the stuff that, all of the stuff that you're cutting off and all that. And you know, it can I'm sure that creative process is probably quite messy, and she was like every day, so, you know, she was a member of ours, she went in and she made sure that the end of every day, even though she was exhausted after eight or nine hours of floristry, made sure that that floral workshop was tidy, so that when she got up the following day, then she didn't come into a mess. And it's the same with your kitchen, the same with your bedroom. You don't want to go into your bedroom at night to get into bed, and it'd be messy. You don't want to come down to your kitchen in the morning to start your day afresh, and it'd be messy. You don't want clothes to be all over your bedroom floor in the morning. You want to open up your wardrobe door and it to look like there's possibility in there in terms of what you're going to wear. So putting that extra, and honestly, it's only five minutes, 510 minutes, depending on, you know, your household and the people in it, it's not that long. But just putting that extra little bit of effort in is really going to reap rewards. We can't stress that highly enough, can we? Oh, it's, like I said before, absolute game changer. And the people who start to do this really as a habit, they actually say, you know, now for me, it's become a non negotiable as well. And every once in a while, I think, Oh, I can't be bothered not doing it today. And I actually, you know, really break myself the next day, like, Oh, why didn't you do it yesterday? Because people realize how important it is. So, yes, definitely the most important one of the list is definitely daily resets, but we've got a couple more for you. What can also really help is those, those little habit changes. You know, if you buy something, realize if you've got all your wardrobes and draws and things as you want it. If I buy something, if something comes in, something needs to come out. In the beginning, you can't do that because you probably have like, okay, loads of stuff needs to go out before something can come in. But at one time, you're gonna feel like, oh, actually, my wardrobes are all starting to, you know, hum, that it's working. If I open doors in my kitchen, My food's not falling out. Oh, if I open the board the cupboard with all the board games, there's not, like, loose pieces everywhere. We can't play games. But if we something new comes in through shopping or a birthday or Christmas or whatever it is, something's got.

To go. You can't just then go, right? I am decluttered now. This is me done for the rest of my life. Woo hoo. No, sorry again. Bears on bad news, baby, you have to keep on decluttering, but it does get easier. That's the good news. So you need to go back though Ingrid, I'm sorry you did say something that I'm gonna have to, you know, evaluate, okay, add your wardrobe now. Hums, yeah. And so, do you know what that means in my world? Oh, I don't know that means like, smells,

be like, Did you mean like, hums along like pears along nicely in a kind of, yeah. I mean, it probably is a thing to be fair, but something that hums to us maybe it's just like a Manchester thing. I don't know. He's like, that smells horrible.

Then you kept on talking. I couldn't put you up over it. I just had to get it in there. So, yeah, tell me, is it just me that says if something hums that it smells, or is that or

is Ingrid completely got that wrong, because I've never heard of a wardrobe humming before. I must admit, I know, I know, but like, runs like clockwork. Is that maybe better then?

I mean, I see where you're coming from. I can understand where the word comes from, but I just don't know whether it's like a thing, but I might be wrong. I keep getting told off all the time when I'm picking you up on these words and things. People are like, I'm with English. He's like, So, but anyway, yeah, yeah. So there we go. I forgot what we were talking about. You were talking about one in, one out, which is a really good habit, so you know, that's really going to help you to maintain those decluttering processes. And one last thing that we wanted to talk about, what is the big bane of our lives, is paperwork and letters and all that kind of stuff that comes into our homes. And I think if we just spend a little bit of time at the point of entry, it's going to save us oodles of time later. So make sure that when that mail, junk mail, letters, free newspapers, all that kind of stuff comes in, or stuff that's coming in from the kids from school, spend literally seconds going through it, ditching the envelopes, ditching the terms and conditions, putting it straight into the recycling, and you've only got to deal with five or six pieces of paper rather than 30. Really, really important. Spend a little bit of time every single day as you pick up your post from behind the door, and it's going to save you loads of time when you get around to doing your paperwork. So really, really important. And there are many, many, many other things that we could talk about where putting a little bit of effort in now reaps those rewards later. But we just wanted to give you a little bit of a feel for why we truly believe that just taking a moment, taking a step back, not rushing into things headlong,

But not rushing into things head first is going to be really, really helpful for you in the future to create that more sustainable decluttering journey that's going to take you through life, rather than being this little one off project. Yeah, I think, you know, I think the crux of it all is that, of course, all decluttering, you know, when you sort out your wardrobes, it's, it's easier to get dressed, it's easier to actually shop for a few bits, because you know where the gaps are. When you're sorting out your pantry, you know which food you have. So you can start to do Bill planning, and you save money on your shopping when you do your paperwork, and you get a whole system going. But these are big things that come later. I think what we talked about today is more like the beginning and the end, and the big step in the middle, you know, there's, yeah, there's just time you have to put in. It's, it's not a weekend sprint. This is something that you have to incorporate in your in your in your daily lives, and definitely, overall, anything decluttering and organizing based will help you and your future self will go I'm so glad I did that. I'm saving so much money. I've got so much more time. I've got so much more energy. I don't feel a slave to my house, because it's always messy all the time, and the housework is a bore, and i i Go away all the time because I just can't stand being at home. It's the place where I love to be and relax and hang out in and in the end, that's what we want from you. For you absolutely so we hope that you know that you are going to go on this declaring journey and think to yourself, I deserve this. I deserve a future person that's happy at home and that wants to be there and.
