Episode 106 – What I have learnt from my Mum

In this episode Lesley speaks to her children Luke, Leah and Nathan about growing up with a declutterer and the regular chores they had to do around the house to get them involved in keeping an organised home.

Today's episode is slightly different, because I am talking to my kids to see whether living with the professional organiser or their lives has taught them anything good or bad about decluttering. And organising is quite interesting, really, because one of the things that we get asked about over and over and over is what people can do to get their children involved at home. And people really do carry the burden of the home on their own shoulders and their kids quite often don't help. So hopefully today will give you a little bit of insight into what I did to encourage my children to get involved. I'm not gonna lie, this has been a little bit scary. So far, we've been brewing, we've been breaking open the wine and the beer. And I'm like, I don't think you quite get in this case. This is a professional podcast. So this is going to be quite fun, I think. So basically, I had the idea spoke to England about it. And I thought Yeah, might be quite good. Because these kids know me really well. They've lived with someone who's been into into decluttering and organising for many, many years. So they've learned and what have they learnt? And I'm interested to know that from them. So welcome, kids. Want to say first of all, hello to Luke, who's my eldest son. Now Luke is 24 years old, and he works now in digital marketing. Now, he lived here for quite some time, many, many years lived in you, and moved out just over a year ago to live with his girlfriend, Ellie, and he still lives quite close to me and Manchester. So hi, Luke.

You're very welcome. So then I want to say hello to Leah Who's Next up, there's my daughter. She's 21. And she's just come back about six months ago, to live at home after graduating from university with a business degree. Hi, Leah.

I'm finally hello to my youngest son Nathan, who's 17 is in his final year at secondary school studying I mean, this is this is as I was writing this script, I actually got his A Levels completely wrong. So I've already been told that I said that I was doing philosophy, politics and economics got that completely wrong. It's actually doing our re politics and economics. I don't even get your air levels. Right, Nathan. But welcome, Nathan.

So let's start talking about some of the things that you have done and learned over the years living with me. I'm sure it's probably been a nightmare at times. But hopefully, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there are some things that you have learned that you're going to take forward into your adult lives or I know that you're actually actually adults already. But, Nathan, you're going to take forward into your adult life. Let's talk first of all about tidying your rooms. So parents are constantly going to tidy room go untidy room. So what's your memories? Look, let's come to you first, what's your memory of me telling you to tidy your room?

I think that throughout my life, we've always definitely disagreed on what a tidy room actually is. My view of having sort of cluttered shelves, but in an organised sense, never seem to gel with your idea of tidiness. And actually, you probably say that there's too many things on those shelves. I was also a big fan of putting things under the bed, sort of out of sight out of mind, although I thought they had an actual place. That wasn't quite what my mom thought. Definitely not. So I think we were at odds. But I think we both agree on the virtue of tidiness. But we had different ideas of what that actually men. I think.

That's interesting. So do you think then I tried to enforce my idea of tithing Sonya growing up? 

Luke  4:02  
Yeah. But I think if I fought back hard enough, on those days where you wanted to, you know, have a big decluttering session, you'd kind of leave me alone, we'd meet each other in the middle and you say, well, Oh, do you at least, you know, took a couple of those 12 year old T shirts away that are barely a pair of boxers do anymore.

That's quite an interesting thing really low. So just to put this into context, and this has not changed since the minute they were born, really. But I've got three kids and the amount of attention that each one of them gets Luke definitely gets the lion's share probably about 70% of the attention seeking in this house. So he's always there. So the resilience is not lying about that. That's actually a thing. Leah then is probably about 20% and Nathan is the other 10. So that just gives you an idea.

Thank you for your lovely insights now. Yes. And the podcast host, you gotta be nice to me. So Leah, my lovely, helpful daughter, who puts these boys to shame. Tell me about tidying the room and how that was for you growing up.

Leah  5:24  
Well, tidying is always in cemented in the household pretty much that since we were children, we were always required to tidy downstairs wherever we were, and the kitchen. And we've also been told to tidy our bedrooms. I think the biggest clash me and my mom always had was my clothes chair. I'm too lazy to actually hang up my clothes. So

They made me sound quiet. So if you know we were made, it's like some kind of slave dragon's head. Was it really that badly? made you do that? 

Luke  5:52  
Would you say that's incorrect?

Lesley  5:54  
Well, I don't know. I'm feeling that he might be a bit a little bit harsh. 

Leah  5:58  
7am. Leah, get up time to tell you that you're not exactly what I want to be doing on a Saturday morning, I must admit.

Luke  6:07  
I just think there's a difference between, you know, strongly requested something and being forced to do it to a mum was definitely a strong requester.

Lesley  6:18  
And Nathan.

yeah, I think I would say that I'm somewhat familiar with the clothes chair as well. Todd in has always been a sort of non negotiable thing. And once a week, so for me now still being at school, I know for a fact that in mornings I wake up, you know, beds done. And then I look and shock horror, there's clothes on the floor, and you've run out of time. And I sort of you're worried if you leave those clothes in that chair and you go downstairs, you feel the need to be like, I'm sorry. I know. It's a mess. I'll sort it out.

Lesley  6:49  
You making me sound terrible. Yeah, I'm regretting getting you on the podcast. I thought this was always going to be really positive. 

Leah  6:55  
You asked us to be honest.

Yes, to be honest, but yeah, so tidieness is it's always been encouraged, I would say positively encouraged. 

Lesley  7:06  
So in summary, you really like your mom, and you're really, really happy that I made you tidy your room

Mmmhmmm

Yeah. Okay, definitely like you. But whilst we put a microscope on the sort of decluttering thing, you know, we're gonna be around the bush.

Lesley  7:24  
Okay, so let's put this into context again, then, how tidy, do you think your rooms are compared to some of your peers?

Leah  7:32  
Very tidy? 

Luke  7:33  
Yeah, I would say massively so.

We're all tidy in this family ultimately.

Leah  7:39  
Our messy rooms are nothing compared to a few of our friends, messy rooms, that's for sure.

Nathan  7:44  
But equally, we're sort of all held accountable to each other standards. And I know, you know, Leah's tidy. And Lukas tidy is probably different to my version of what tidy is. So it is, but equally, there are probably quite high standards, I would say.

Lesley  8:00  
I would agree with that. I would agree with that. And so and that's, I guess, that's just our non negotiable in this house. Really think because it's important to me. And I kind of force you in a commerce, as you've nicely said, to actually tidy your room. So let's talk about what you've mentioned, non negotiables. And the declutter will love a non negotiable in a daily reset. So let's talk about what your non negotiables are. So what I mean by that, for anybody who's not a decluttered member, is that there are certain things every day that you need to do to reset your house. There are things that I've expected my children to do some from quite an early age and some as they get older. So Leah, you start us off? What do you think the first non negotiable is in the Spellman household?

Leah  8:46  
I'd definitely say that it's making my bed in the morning without making my bed. I just feel unprepared for my day ahead.

Lesley  8:55  
And do you think that's something that you've taken with you when you've moved out? So you lived in a student house for three years? So did you use to make your bed there as well? You went when you went away?

Leah  9:03  
Oh, definitely, at pretty much every day, I made my bed unless I was hungover, which I must admit it was fairly often as a student in my head, that the day I was gonna have at uni would not be as prepared or as successful as if my bed hadn't been made in the beginning of the day.

Lesley  9:21  
Yeah, I think backpack is a really critical part of it. And I think Nathan, nine times out of 10 You make your bed before you go off to school as well don't Yeah,

Nathan  9:30  
I think yeah, that making the bed is something that has been encouraged and sort of learn and then as time has gone on, and I've maybe become slightly more self sufficient, but only slightly. It's something that I actively want to try and do. And it doesn't matter what my room looks like. Everywhere else. I think the bed will always be done.

Lesley  9:48  
So you've moved out now. So do you make your bed every day before you get up and start your day?

Luke  9:54  
Honestly, I'm listening to the other two speak about how much they love making the bed and I sort of don't share that same passion. However, is our bed made every day? Yes, because there's another person whose tidiness I can benefit from, which is my girlfriend, Ellie. But that doesn't mean I don't see the value in a maid bed. I just think occasionally I might be the one who's still learning it.

Lesley  10:19  
It's hard to make the bed when you're still waiting.

Luke  10:22  
I think of, of the three kids, I probably made my bed the least. And it was a gripe with mom, sort of get home from school and be told I didn't make my bed yet again. And I think always it just comes down to the time I get out of bed. So I wish it sort of cold but maybe a bit rubbish on that one.

Lesley  10:39  
What about another non negotiable that you do within the house every day that I have an expectation that you as kids from a young age are going to do?

Nathan  10:47  
I suppose not every day, but something we always need to keep on top of for sure is the cubby, which I think it's probably different for for Luke and for Leah. But for me, that always requires prompting, but most of the time after prompting, I will then go and do it. So that's obviously just our washing that's not necessarily hung up is then in that cubby, and then that's down towards to organise and sticking drawers and what have you. But that's something as well, which while I'm not very good at, and it can often sit in my room for an awful long time. But it will get done eventually.

Lesley  11:19  
With that forcing that you mentioned before, basically, but I'd say the kind of forcing other parents that you mentioned before. Leah, do you want to explain a little bit more about the cubby because I feel that might be a Spellman phrase. So do you want to explain exactly what the cubby is just for our listeners. 

Leah  11:37  
So basically, in our washing room, we have moveable drawers that all pull out each labelled with our name in. And that is basically where all of our underwear and pyjamas all go and then we have to maybe once every few days, once a week, we all go in empty our own Cubby. So mum does the washing we do our emptying of the cubby? Which is only fair, I would say.

Lesley  12:02  
And do you have a similar system to that now that you've moved out? Do you have that kind of empty laundry and taking it upstairs or do you just have to do all in one go now,

Luke  12:11  
Ultimately, we got less clothes, there's only two of us. So it doesn't warrant cubbies as such, but that same idea of just kind of getting it done, you know, you do the wash, put it where it needs to go, you can leave it till after tea or wherever. But just don't leave it to the next day. That's definitely carried over into life. Because think for a long time it was just putting it off and making a job harder for yourself. Ultimately, no one wants to put away socks, but you got to do it. So just get out of the way is definitely something that moms instilled into us. So I reckon there's a couple more that are that we've pretty much always had. Remember, in every house we've kind of lived in, there's one that we call the basket. And that is a little wicker basket that sits by the coat stand in the hallway. We've got quite a busy house, people are coming and going all the time and you know, different sports and different activities and what things get left in the kitchen and around the hallways. What we've never had to do is immediately take them upstairs, but they do get put in the basket. And they do get taken upstairs later that day. Or maybe a day later. But Mum will, who knows what method she uses to decide who's going to do it. But she'll just pick one of you, you sort of jump for joy when it's not your name called sort of go along the lines of Nathan go and do the basket please,

It tends to be Nathan, I think. 

Luke  13:30  
Definitely just seems like a you job to do the baskets to be fair. And then the job is literally to take it upstairs and dump whatever is another person's onto their bed, and then they come back to a nice little pile of things to put away in the room all seems to work quite well actually. Because it's not that hard a job. But that's something that we've always had. And then I think another one that's definitely worth mentioning is how we do dinner times and cleaning up the kitchen is definitely a non negotiable rule that you can't leave the kitchen if it's not tidy after dinner. And we sort of applied our own little rule amongst the siblings and stuff. Like if you were the one that cooked in or you were exempt that night, that seemed to work quite well. But ultimately, the kitchen was done after dinner straightaway. And I mean, I can't speak for the other two. But that's absolutely carried on throughout my life. Now, I think I've struggled with a union a shared house, but now in my own house, I sort of don't see it being any other way. You sort of just tidy after each meal and it's reset for the next time. So I think that of all the non negotiables the basket that could be the bed, the one that's definitely carried on for me is the kitchen tidy.

Good. So I taught you well. 

Nathan  14:40  
Yeah, sometimes.

Lesley  14:45  
Not so sure. They're all scared when we when we go off mic there. All right, is that okay? Well, I just said is that okay? Because it would be a bit too honest. Like it's fine. That's what this is all about. It's about what are they? Of course everybody's gonna know that I haven't quite string engines rules that have applied because that's what you have to have if you want to involve your family in doing things. And, you know, we all know how hard it is to get our children involved in doing chores for us. And sometimes you get to a stage where it's just easier to do it yourself. And I'm going to be really honest here, there's been plenty of times in this house, where I do these things myself, because my children have not done them. And so it's not that they are doing these things rigidly every day. But there's definitely a semblance of that happening. And I think they know that in principle they need to be done. And so, you know, our advice to you is try and get your children involved from a really young age and try and instil these things into them, don't do everything yourself, the workload absolutely needs to be shared amongst the family. Otherwise, it's just too hard. And then that's when you become very, very overwhelmed.

Obviously, we call these things non negotiable. But I think we all realised eventually that if you kind of did the non negotiables, then mom and dad will kind of be off your back on the bigger rules. So as you're trying to get out of the door to go short, you know, chill with your mates in the park, you do non negotiables really quick, and then you've appeased mom and you can get out the door quicker.

Lesley  16:09  
Very simple, very simple rules. There are no you know, you could pull the wool over my eyes by by doing a bit of washing up and then you could just do what you want. Is that what you're saying? You're on

Luke  16:17  
the way, aren't you? So if you're doing copies and you sort of give a little smile and say, Well, how do you sum the dawn run off? So

Lesley  16:24  
let's talk about declutter, and specifically, and what impacts decluttering had on you then, while you're growing up? Okay, Leah so decluttering in your room have many fond memories of decluttering in your room, but I feel like sometimes when I decided that it's going to be done, it might be a little bit early in the morning for you because you do like your bed.

Leah  16:44  
Yep, the 7am rude awakenings are not for me, I must admit. So when she runs in Leah, it's time for your declutter, having had done it six months prior. I must admit I'm less than pleased for that to be happening. At the end of the day, when my room is decluttered. And there's two bags of clothes gone. I always do feel better for us, I must admit.

Lesley  17:07  
Yeah, we did your makeup didn't weigh as well did a nice, declutter of your makeup.

Leah  17:12  
That was very satisfying. It was and you do like it

Lesley  17:15  
to be fair, you do like the Declutter. You just don't like doing it at the time that I want to do it. Do you think it's not? And so, but would you say that you do do decluttering on your own without me? Or do you prefer doing it with me?

Leah  17:28  
I think occasionally I do do it by myself. But I think having a declutter as a mother definitely makes it easier when you want to make them decisions. But you don't necessarily know whether it should go or it should stay by yourself. And having a little prompt from you definitely helps.

Yeah, I think in fairness to Lea, none of us really appreciate that early being woken up at seven o'clock or whatever it may be. 

Lesley  17:58  
Can I just say I'm not even sure that I'm hoping summer, like whenever I come home at seven o'clock in the morning, it has been seven o'clock I can really clearly homelesses or just kind of lunchtime. I don't even function with my clients till about half nine. Why would it be coming into your bedrooms at seven o'clock in the morning? No, I actually contest this. I don't believe this is the case. 

Nathan  18:21  
I can categorically say that I've been woken up at seven o'clock before. I think I have a quite vivid memory of I did do it quite recently. Yeah. And that was a one off. Yeah, I was lying in bed and slamming through the door like, do you want this drawn this t shirt? You're too big for this now. So. So yeah, I mean, I think we can all appreciate those seven o'clock, shall we call them rude awakenings. But from my perspective, I do actually appreciate them. And I know that maybe not in quite the same extent as Luke or Leah, I really benefit from I think my mom, because I'm quite lazy, I would say and so it's very easy to sit there. And if you do something badly enough, then eventually she will pick up the slack, I would say so it's nice to sit on the end of your bed and be like, yeah, now you can get rid of that you can get rid of that. It's quite like, cathartic. Maybe, you know, after you do it, you feel better for it. I think in the long run.

I'm just a little bit nervous as well about the tone that you're suggesting that I do my decluttering and like, do you want this? Do you want that? Because that is not the tone that I tend to use with my clients is much more softly softly So can we can we just establish that that's not really a thing.

Nathan  19:27  
I think I'm just a little bit jealous of your clients to be honest.

Leah  19:30  
Maybe a key might treat a slightly different than your clients. Mom.

Lesley  19:34  
Okay. You probably right? So Luke ever has any lovely decluttering experiences with your mother? Luke's thinking...

Luke  19:45  
you know, I actually have many standout memories of us doing a bit of a decluttering session together. I think I was always really quite resistant to the idea of my mum sort of going through my drawers and cupboards and stuff and sort of always came to the agreement that well I will Do it. And so I'd kinda go grab a bin bag and throw away the oldest T shirts and stuff. And as much as I never wanted to do it, when I got to the end of it, I saw the benefit, because you've got more cupboard space for clothes that you actually like. And all of a sudden, you sort of feel like you're sifting through an actual collection of clothes that, you know, makes you happier, wherever you actually have good memories of doing it, probably not. But it definitely brought value to my life,

Lesley  20:29  
I think to be fairly, the clutter is still a lot there. Because it's still you've moved out and left your clutter behind you, which you refuse to come back and sort out. So that's the whole, so perhaps you've never actually done any decluttering in your life. And that's why I've got no memories of it. Well, I think like father, like son, I would say,

Luke  20:46  
I think as soon as you, you know, took my bed out. It stopped being my bedroom. Not my room, not my problem. I think

Lesley  20:55  
This is getting very beefy now. So we need to probably move on. So we've talked about tidying, and we've talked about decluttering. Now, Leah, you've actually done a decluttering session with me as my little helper, haven't you? How did you find that?

Leah  21:07  
Yeah, so every time I've come with you, it's really satisfying to see the start to end process. And really nice to see the complete change in the clients. Or, and you can just see that there is a massive weight lifted off their own shoulders, and they just feel sick, or seem so much happier. From the beginning to the end of the day. There's a massive change in their way that they are and definitely how they feel as well.

It was really good for and actually you weren't great. I think Paulie actually as well as that is firmly immersed at the moment in doing everything with the declutter hub members area as well. So she's living eating and breathing decluttering at the moment, aren't you? I am indeed. She's loving it, loving it, so that you've now moved out. So you don't have the benefit of having me shouting at you and forcing you to do decluttering in your room and tidying and non negotiables anymore, you are your own person in your own house. So is there anything that you feel that you've learned along the way that's been helpful, or anything else that you wanted to ask?

Luke  22:12  
I definitely feel like without realising at the time, I was taking a lot of these things in, you know, kids and parents will always sort of Clash whenever there's chores involved. But then as soon as you kind of paying rent, you sort of looked back on and think, Oh, God, I really see how I was a bit of a pain back in the day. Because I thought it was the worst thing ever picking a towel up off the floor or something like that. But I think as I move down sort of payment and rent, it's not really a uni anymore, where you know, things are a little bit different, sort of see the appeal and tidying as you go, kind of reset of room and taking it back and you might give it new, like new like new life, it us our spare room certainly goes from being a glorified drying room, it's got nowhere else in the house for the for the racks, you know, to a clean and tidy spare room and we set like the TV up and X Box and nice lamp and it becomes like a new space and but that's only when we actually make the effort and kind of do it. And so without realising our little arguments and the you know, the non negotiables, you have to kind of get out of the way on a Saturday morning, if you want it to go and see your friends were actually really quite beneficial. Don't get me wrong, I'm so happy. I haven't got to do that anymore. But it's on my terms now, I think is ultimately the

Lesley  23:31  
new thing. That's what it is like, I think it's on your terms. And I think that's the case, you know, and just going back to what I was saying at the beginning, you know, as parents, it's just we don't like doing it either. So we don't like constantly nagging our children to do things. But it's just something that has to be done. And our priorities are very different than your priorities when you're growing up. And so it's all about that priority shift. And as soon as you then move out into your own house, your priorities starts then become aligned then with your parents. And so I think that's what it's all about. So that's what's interesting, really the difference between you Luke, then who have got your own space now, Leah who's had a, you know, she's lived on her own she's had a student house, and Nathan then who's still at home and has not experienced what it's like to be proud of your own space. And so do you think that you've learned anything, Nathan over the over the years that you will take away with you and you're going to work from home next year? Is there anything that you think you'll take with you?

Yeah, I'm sure I'm gonna then take a lot of the skills that that I'm sure Luke and Leah have shown whilst they've been at their sort of different stages in life and moderate that to suit me as I'm sure all people will have to do and going through it and seeing how that progresses.

I think it's actually really interesting because one of the things that we talk about, that people talk about all the time, particularly clients of mine, is what we find is that people who have had parents who've been quite extreme, so quite extremely clean and neat and tidy. or more on the cluttered hoarding scale? Perhaps in some instances, there's no pattern in terms of, do people follow in the parents footsteps? Or do people fight against what their parents did. So it can go both ways. And so it's quite interesting. I feel quite competent, just looking at you now as young adults that you will probably take some of those tidy organisational skills with you, I don't feel that you're going to fight against it, because you've not fought against it really as children. So yes, I have quite high standards in the house. The most important thing for me when you were all growing up is that I wanted a house where you could live in and enjoy. Well, that was an interesting podcast, trying to keep my three children under control and to getting them to say all the right things for me, I think they've been honest and insightful. It's been interesting to me as well, because it's not really a conversation that we sit down and have very often about how I affected them, it could have gone so much deeper than that it could have gone so much deeper, actually. But we kept it all about and decluttering and organising, which is absolutely fine. So I hope that's been really helpful for you, and has given you some food for thought about if you've got young children, the kinds of routines and habits that you might want to start instilling into your children. What are your non negotiables going to be? Are you going to encourage your children to clean up after dinner? If they're of the age that they can? Are you going to insist that they make their bed every morning so they start the day in the best way possible? Are you going to ask your children to put their clothes away if you're the one that's doing the laundry or doing the ironing, there's lots and lots of things, and everybody's got a different way of dealing with their children's chores, but one thing's for sure the whole family needs to get involved.
