Show Summary

  • Step 1: Get ready to declutter and prepare (bin bags, make your bed, laundry basket, damp clothes and hoover so you can do some cleaning, have new hangers ready)
  • Step 2: Start with wardrobes so you make faster progress. One wardrobe at a time. Flat surface or bed to create categories. Either pre-sort or put it all on one pile first and the sort.
  • Step 3: Clean the wardrobe. Hoover and then wipe. Don't forget to dust the hangers and the rail.
  • Step 4: Ask yourself questions. Do you love it, do you wear it, why are you struggling to make decisions? Listen to podcast episode 22 if you'd like to know more.
  • Step 5: Hold each item up. Button it up, straightened it up, put it on the right hanger, take off metal hangers, try it on.
  • Step 6: Put back in what you want and don't worry about categorisation yet.
  • Step 7: What you no longer want; charity, ragging, selling, stuff for other people, mending and dry cleaning, items to return to friends. Bag up and don't overfill.
  • Step 8: Get it out to the charity shop the same day.
  • Step 9: Repeat the process in your drawers and other wardrobes.
