Episode 19 – How to declutter a kitchen

In this podcast, Lesley and Ingrid chat about accessibility, compromising and logic when decluttering a kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home and it's an important room to get right. It can save you time, money and your sanity because you spend a lot of time in the kitchen. You prepare meals, do the washing up, lots of us have your washing machine in the kitchen, so it’s a room that has to work hard.

Show Summary

  • Accessibility: have things in a place that make most sense. Have heavy items below counter and lighter items higher up. Look at the flow and have everything in a smart place that makes sense to you. Put items you don’t use a lot in the least accessible places and have your everyday items at eye level.
  • Compromise: be realistic and decide if you're an aspirational cook or not; have the right kind of stuff for the size of your kitchen. Space to cook is more important than having every kitchen gadget known to man. Declutter items you never use so you have space to move things from your work surface into cupboards. Review your glassware so you can create space for only those glasses that fit your lifestyle.
  • Logic: be sensible in what food you put together and create zones; put pasta/rice/grains/pulses together. An option is to put a basket in a cupboard to create a drawer that you can then pull out. Buy smaller packaging and have a look through your tins and put them into categories like fish, soups, fruit and vegetables. Go through the thought process of deciding where things should live and where makes most sense.
