I'm ridiculously excited to talk about this, this topic, and actually, I'm kind of surprised that we never done a podcast about coat hangers, or aka hangers before, because we can talk about hangers for hours, there's something about hangers that's a game changer in people's wardrobes. So yeah, I'm excited,

yeah. And I think, you know, I think for two professional organizers, it's kind of a, there's a geekiness associated with getting the right kind of hanger isn't there? So yeah, we could definitely wax lyrical about hangers for hours and hours, but we'll try and keep it brief, as she says. And I think before we get started on talking about the different and we're going to go through various types of hangers and the pros and cons of those in our opinion, you know, and everybody's entitled to their own opinion, and different things work for different people, right? But I think that when you are decluttering your clothes, the most important thing to focus your attention on is decluttering your clothes and making sure you retain the ones that you know you love. When you open your wardrobe door, they're going to make you happy you know, have things around you that suit your current lifestyle, and have everything in your wardrobe be possible. We're all about. When you open your wardrobe door, see possibility rather than impossibility. That's what we're looking for. So the most important thing is the decluttering and organizing the hangers and different types of hangers is really the kind of icing on top of the cake. Cake, isn't it? Ingrid, because if you have budget to and choose to swap hangers over so they're all of a similar type, or just a couple of different types, depending on what you need, then it's an esthetic benefit, and it also looks much less cluttered, which is why it's an esthetic benefit. So yeah, we don't want to go too over the top and get too fixated on hangers. But we want you to factor this in. If it's a possibility and it Abby, you can absolutely declutter your entire wardrobes, all wardrobes in your home, 100% successfully, without ever changing any kind of hanger. But we want to open up the possibility of doing so, don't we? Yes, I

think because we really know it can really be a game changer, like we like we said before, it really can lift up a wardrobe or a walk in closet, or whatever you have in your home, and as soon as you and a lot of people go, what a child? What are they talking about? Hangers cannot be this important. But trust me, so many people, either in our communities, in our membership, the clients that we've worked with were like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Then they got a different type of hanger, made it all look more uniform, and it really took it to that really nice level of wow. This really feels done. It doesn't feel so chaotic and messy anymore, and that's just by changing the hangers over and making it all look much better. And, yeah, it's really that, that fantastic feeling you get from I really want to open my wardrobe doors now. This is fantastic, absolutely.

So let's dive in. Ingrid, there's lots of different types of hangers, and we're just going to cover the basic ones, right? So let's get started on free hangers, what we'd like to call free hangers. So the hangers that you get from a shop when you buy something, they go to on the hanger. First things first. We kind of like you to say no, you know, for the environment, for sustainability, but if you need more hangers, then clearly say yes. And that is what we have done many, many, many times in the past. And there are times as well where free. Hangers. It wasn't even an option. It you just got it regardless, didn't you? Now, as things are coming becoming more environmentally friendly, you are getting asked whether or not you want the hanger. Now, what do we think about a free hanger Ingrid?

Well, actually, I mean, there's nothing wrong with the free hanger. I mean, they're plastic, they're normally they don't give you broken hangers. They're the right size hanger for you, because, you know, if you are an adult, they give you an adult hanger that actually fits. They've gotten sometimes even the size on them. So on the first look, there's not a lot wrong with shop hangers, but there is, of course, a but Right? But the problem is that if you shop in different kinds of stores, you will get lots of different types of hangers. The shape is different, the color is different, the size is different, the name on them from the shop is, of course, different. And that is, I think, what the problem is, because if you've got all these different types of hangers, your clothes don't look uniform. They look messy because some of them have really short wooden parts to hang them up. Others have really long so they don't then hang on the same level. It becomes quite messy. And I think that's where the problem lies. So I think it's fair to

say that they are low down on our list of favorite hangers. Yeah, but they serve a functional purpose, and they are free, okay? Very, very important, right? So we tend not to have paid for them. So let's move on to other types of plastic hangers. So there are plastic hangers everywhere that we buy. What do we think about a decent quality plastic hanger that you buy from the shop? Yeah, I

think there's definitely pros to those, because you can then pick your own color. There are multiple colors available. So you could go, actually, I'm going to give each family member their own color, or I'm just like, I like lots of different colors in my wardrobe, so I'm not going to stick with the one color. I don't mind. Normally, they're quite sturdy. They're the same. They're normally not super expensive either. So yeah, lots to like about it.

Yeah, durability is a big one for plastic hangers. Anything plastic is going to be more durable generally. And the other the other thing as well, you can get a decent plastic hanger from some dry cleaning places. So quite often, the dry cleaners will put things on plastic hangers. And they are mom trying to think in the UK, like Johnson's and stuff have like yellow hangers. And so you do get some decent quality hangers quite often, they'll use metal as well, but plastic hangers are definitely can get for free. So yeah, it's just, again, it's a little bit of mishmash, different sizes, different shapes, so I don't mind a plastic hanger. Actually, it's fairly high on my list, not at the top, but it's fairly high on my list.

Then lastly, of course, with the whole world around us working really hard to become more equal eco friendly, in the last kind of couple of years, we've really seen other types of hangers, like made from cardboard, made from bamboo, made from wood pulp made from biopolymer. I was like, looking at she's trying to say it with authority, like bio polymer. I'm like, no idea. Like, Diana has got any idea what it is. It just came up in a Google search. So that was an eco friendly hanger. And I think the point is well done for saying that language, you know, with such authority. I think the thing is about, if I'm being really honest about sort of environmentally friendly, sustainable hangers, incredible, amazing. Love it. But I can't say that I have tested or used them enough to have an opinion on them in terms of how they feel. I would imagine that if people are going to the lengths of creating them, that they they will be good. The sizes will be good, the shapes will be good, the durability will be good. Because no one's going to buy a cardboard hanger if, if it's not durable, you know, and there are a lot of cardboards that are really heavy and strong and all that kind of stuff. So you know, if you've used a bio polymer or a bamboo or a cardboard hanger, let us know, because we would love to know somebody who has used them more, because we haven't. We gotta, we gotta come clean, haven't we? We've not used them. But I think it's absolutely brilliant, and probably in 1020, years time, that's all we'll have,

right? Yeah, yeah, I would say so. I mean, I think people are getting so much more conscious about them what they bring into their homes. They really want to work on the environment, yeah. So if this is, you know, your bag, go for it and really look into what you would think is the best solution for you, and that would fit best around your clothes. You

know, what will probably happen, if being honest Ingrid, is that it'll come from the shops. So it'll be the shops that start to, instead of using plastic hangers, start to use sustainable alternatives to hangers, and then people might start to take them home because they are sustainable alternatives. And that's where we'll get an influx into our homes of those kind of things. And we'll have the same problem that we spoke about before, where you've got a mishmash of different hangers because you're getting them from different shops, but I imagine that they probably will lead the way, right?

Yeah, I would say so. So yes, a big companies go for it. Give us more sustainable hangers, because it's super important. Let's move on to wooden hangers. Then Lesley, they're nice. I like a good, nice wooden hanger, yeah,

and you'd certainly need a wooden hanger for certain things, don't you? So you need something with a bit more bulk to it when you're hanging sort of jackets and suit jackets and things with padded shoulders and things like that. And so there's definitely a need for wooden hangers somewhere in your wardrobe. But they are very, very bulky, and depending on what wooden hanger you get, some of them are really wide kind of ends, haven't they? Like? If you wouldn't hang, you know, you buy an expensive suit or something like that, then they're really wide. And, you know, you wouldn't be able to have many of those in your average wardrobe. And so I think to have as many to go for completely wood, you need a kind of Kim Kardashian style wardrobe. Really, don't you need tons of space for that, because they take up so much space, so your average wardrobe wouldn't be able to accommodate more than the wooden hangers that you might need for coats and jackets, right? Yeah. But I think again, there are different qualities. You know, some of them are beautiful, some of them are quite slippery because they're nicely varnished. Some of them snag a little bit, you know, if you get cheaper wooden hangers, because they've got little splinters on them and stuff like that. So you do need to be really careful with the wooden hangers that you buy. All wooden hangers are not equal. So in my house, I just use them for coats and jackets. I don't use them in the in my main wardrobe, because I've got that somewhere else. What about you? Do you have

not, not, not many and also, because they're very heavy, and it's exactly what you're saying. Lesley, if you get them from different shops, a lot of times they're different colors. Some of them are like, you know, dark wood. Some of them are very light, more beach kind of wood. So again, it can look quite messy, but indeed, I would only use it for like my winter coats, like heavy, heavy clothing that does need a proper, proper hanger. But I'm limited on space in my house, so I can't have loads and loads of of wooden hangers, although I think it looks very chic, you know, it looks very nice. If you've got a beautiful wardrobe with lots of wooden hangers, it's like, oh, so nice. Oh, nicely spaced. And I'm like, yeah, it looks amazing. But it wouldn't work in my house was, I don't have that much hanging space, so I need to kind of,

I think the problem is, you know, if we, you know, you know, we're, a little bit anti Insta perfect homes, really, aren't we, because we're all about realism here. And I think that what we see so we see a lot, that if people show pictures of wardrobes, it will undoubtedly be that spaced out wooden hanger with like three inches in between, with like seven items with a light and a beautiful Do you know what I mean? So we so we want it. Of course we want it, because esthetically, 100% it would be the best hanger to have if you could, you know, if you had space to space, it all out, because they're beautiful and they they're going to be great, aren't they, but as you say, like the lion's share of us have got not a chance of getting wooden hangers as the main hanger in our wardrobe? Yeah,

yeah, definitely. Then Lesley, um, how do you feel about kind of these hangers with these clips on with, like this metal bar on them, and for clips, so you can kind of clip in your skirt, or clip in your trousers, or wooden hangers with a metal bar across and clips. You can clip, kind of the trouser and the jacket together. How do you sit with those types of hangers? Do

you know what I do? I do have some of those. So for anything that I need to clip, which for me, is just skirts, and so I clip, I always clip skirts, and I have the ones with that are straight, so they don't have a curve on them like a normal hanger, so they're straight across with a movable clip. So the clip will move in and out depending on the size of the skirt. Mine's always maxed out, obviously, like a tiny little thing, but it can move if I decided to lose like three stone or something. But yeah, so, so I basically have a straight one, and I do use those, and then I use the same tie. Pipe so that they hang at the same level, but they still look different. With the other hangers that I've got in my wardrobe, there are different kinds. But the problem that I've got if it's a skirt, it's typically locked. So my skirts are normally that mid calf, I would say most of my skirts, and so if I clipped it at the top with a straight hanger, I'm not losing any depth on on that, on it. And if I used one that was on a normal hanging or the ones that kind of curve down, then I think it would muskets would trail on the bottom of my floor. So, yeah, so I do use wooden clip hangers. Yes. What about you?

Padded hangers, like the nice satiny ones, they look oh, there's they look so nice when you go into like a nice shop and you see, like these delicate clothes. like looking at all the velvet, all the pad hangers instead of the other stuff.

Yeah, looking at, I mean, but equally, you know, for, like, often they, I know that you would use them for, like, a really fine silk or satin shirt as well, if you wanted to something like that. But a lot of people would use them for, like, camisole tops and things like that. But I wouldn't put those things. I wouldn't hang those things up, would you No, I mean, I've got any silk. Mine are, like, cotton or silk camisole tops would be a nice thought, wouldn't it, but, but they do look lovely, but I feel, and I feel like a lot of people have inherited those as well, because they're quite a big thing in the 70s and 80s. And so I think there are a few sentimental, padded hangers hanging around, which are quite nice as well, aren't they? Yeah, yeah. So, yeah. Where do you see them? You see them in like, white company in the UK. Don't you ever get if you ever go to white company and stuff, they they use them as well, which are quite nice. But I just feel like they're a bit of a one off hanger, unless,

tiered hangers. Lesley, multi tiered hangers. I mean, we could just get the soap box ready, really, basically, right, get the soul books out and let them step on it and go, no, no,

I think, do you know what? I know where it comes from. So they are sold. You know, they come up all the time on my like feed, on my like ad feed, you know, on Facebook and all that. Because obviously, I'm in the industry, I'm like, no see less. Do not want to hide this ad. Do not want to save you know what I mean? But I think that if you are somebody who has struggled with clutter and your wardrobes are packed to the brim, and somebody tries to sell you something and tells you that it's space saving. It sounds like a good idea. So I can understand why people fall for I will have multi tiered hangers. But the reality in our opinion, and some people do like them, to be fair, and so if that's you, then that's absolutely fine. But in our world, typically, people are working with fuller wardrobes than they are emptier wardrobes. You know, same way. There are loads of people who would be able to, easily able to put all wooden hangers in their wardrobe, but they've not really got a clutter problem, and are not really, probably in our world and so but multi tiered hangers, it's something where people see the space saving possibility of it. Yeah. But the reality is, if you then use them for trousers, which a lot of people do, jeans, you know, things like that. You know, these are the ones where they've got several rungs on the bottom, normally four or five rungs. So it's like a normal hanger with different additional rungs. So they call rungs the hanger bottom things the kind of straight bit of the hanger. And then they'll put different trousers over them, and they are seriously heavy, aren't they? Ingrid, you need to be like doing weight training to get them out your wardrobe, if it's jeans, wouldn't you? And one of the big things that we love so much, and we're big advocates of all over the house, is visibility and accessibility. You do now have visibility on your clothes because you've got all of your jeans or trousers together, and they are really difficult to access because you typically have to take you don't, not always depend on how you put them on, but you have to take one off. You certainly have to take the hanger out of the wardrobe for a start, wouldn't you to get the to get the trousers off, and then you have, sometimes you have to take other trousers to get to the ones that you want. So it's really, there are so many reasons why they're so bad. I'm going to say bad.

Yeah, let's I think we're quite calm about it. I mean, we could go into a whole rant about multi tier hangers. We've really, really disliked them, and yeah, they're our least favorite hanger. So

do you know why? Why I think we got, we ranked about it Ingri because I think it's Miss selling. Yeah, it's trying to sell a dream of additional space. Which the complete lie? It's a complete lie. But at the end of the day, the six pairs of trousers hanging still need the space as six pairs of six pairs of trousers, you know, yeah, the size of the trouser doesn't go down just because you've got a different hanger. And so that's what annoys me. It drops lower in your wardrobe. But often, if you've got like, a half and half wardrobe, which a lot of people do these days, it's useless anyway, because it's just gonna hang on the bottom, like, drag on the bottom of your wardrobe. Yeah, I think that's why I get angry about it, because people go, Oh, isn't that great idea? I'm like, No. Like, absolutely not. It's a terrible idea.

So we'll see you soon. Okay, welcome back everybody now, you heard us rant about multi tiered hanger, so I think let's start on the positive note now and share with you what our favorite hangers are. Lesley do the honors, what are our favorite hangers? I

don't think it'll be a surprise with it really, but just in case you were wondering, it is the velvet or flop hanger, so the ones that are typically black, although they come in all different colors now as well, they are kind of like a velvety felt a coating on them, and they are very thin. And they are space saving. They absolutely are space saving, because you're not taking any space up with the clothes with the actual hanger itself

exactly and the nice thing is, they're thin, but they're not too thin, like wire hangers from the dry cleaners are too thin and they can damage your clothing. But velvet hangers are just exactly the right between too thin or too big, they're just, just right, I think. And exactly what you're saying, Lesley, they come in lots of different colors. They are velvet, so a lot of clothes don't slip off easily, because, especially when you've got a lot of kind of I'm wearing, like, why? I don't know what it's called, kind of wearing a top today that's quite slippery. A velvet hanger is perfect to hang these things on, because they don't fall off. Because that's what we see a lot as well, that when we do wardrobes with clients or members are doing wardrobes, they're like, oh my gosh, I found like, four tops in the bottom of my water that I completely forgot. Now I kind of fallen off the hanger, and that's what you prevent as well. With velvet hangers, they are easily accessible. You can buy them in bulk and don't, don't cost a fortune. I think we've only found one downside to them, right? Lesley, if we kind of, you know, we have to talk the downsides as well.

I think there's two downsides so that people talk about, and I think it's, I think you've really got to buy carefully. You've got to buy well, because there are, because they are very popular nowadays, and you can get the most in most shops. There are cheaper replicas of them, there are cheaper versions, which is fine, it depends on budget, right? But I think the the one criticism that people have is that, because they are felt, a velvet kind of coating on them sometimes that can get onto your clothes. So the like, almost like little particles. It's it always comes off as dust. Now, in my in my experience, the ones that we've used that goes away quite quickly. It's there at the beginning, but then it kind of goes away. And the other there's actually three. I've got to. Got three downsides. Now, the second one is that they snap. They can snap quite easily because they're thin, they're brittle, and if you try and manipulate them too much, the plastic, because they are plastic underneath, can snap. So that's a criticism that we get sometimes as well. And the third criticism that we get is that they're awkward to handle things like T shirts and so, you know, Ingrid was talking before about the being brilliant because they're non slip hangers for things like silk and all that, because things don't slip off them. But equally, because things don't slip off them, things don't slide easily into into them, either. So on a plastic hanger, things slide in. So if you're doing a full revamp of your wardrobe, and you might have hundreds, which is very common, of items in your wardrobe. It can take it can slow you down, but it's really only a problem when you're handling things. You know, bulk handling items, if you're only doing your iron in a few weeks, over hanging a few things up in the week, it's not really a problem, but when, as professional organizers, it can slow us down a little bit if you don't handle them well. So there are, there are downsides to them. But for me, the pros far outweigh the cons. And if you buy the right kind of hanger and learn how to handle your clothes, well, then those cons go away, right? I

completely agree. Well, I can tell you, Lesley, I think you know, we both have been working nearly 15 years as professional organizers. We've helped so many people with their wardrobes. We've seen so many different types of hangers. And when I put all the pros and cons of all the hangers against each other, the velvet hanger is by far my favorite hanger. By far. Yeah, it's brilliant. Yeah,

absolutely. And I think, you know, we talked about the beginning of the podcast about esthetics. That is what it really does. Space is the most important positive feature of these hangers. Esthetics is huge. You know, all of a sudden your wardrobe looks well put together. It looks intentional, because you've got all of the same types of hanger in there, and you've got that little bit more space. Once people change, they're like, Why did I not do this years ago? On it? We, we have converts all the time. We kind of so we're trying to convince people, because there's a lot of factors that you need to think about. We're going to talk about some of those in a moment. If you're doing like a hanger swap over and things like that. But actually, once you make that leap, and sometimes that will be a phase leap, that it really does make a difference, and all of a sudden, your wardrobe looks amazing, doesn't it? Yeah,

and I think it's for a lot of people, I think they start to really then enjoy the clothes. The clothes become, instead of kind of a unitary item that you kind of have to get dressed in the morning. Once you do a whole clear out of your wardrobes, you really choose, what kind of clothes do I like? What do I feel good in? What do I like wearing? What is in right fabric for me? And then on top of that, also go, Okay, right? I'm also going to look at my hangers and really make it look good. Wow, it's it's the experience of getting changed in the morning really changes. And I know some people probably rolling their eyes listening to this, but trust us on that it really, really is true. You know what?

Ingrid, there's just one thing that I wanted to come back to. And I know we've been doing the big build up to our, you know, wonderful hanger, but we skipped over wire hangers and didn't cover them.

Ingrid is the one who writes the list, and wire was not on the list until she randomly slotted it in when she was talking about her favorite and I was like the wire hanger, which probably 90% of the people have got in their wardrobes. We've not even discussed, I feel like we need to say why a wire hanger is good or not good very quickly. Yes.

Well, a wire hanger, we often get from the dry cleaners, don't we, so the clothes come back from the dry cleaners. We're like, oh, somebody else who's washed an arm. This is amazing. But what we then the clothes are covered in plastic. They're on wire hangers. And we kind of go ahead and plonk it in the wardrobes, thinking we'll look at that another day, and then we need to get ready in the morning. We kind of rip the plastic off, try and untangle one wire of the massive wires that have also been put together with a little rope as well, and off we go. There's a problem with wire hangers. They're very, very thin. And you know, if you've got a piece of clothing on a wire hanger for one day, it's not going to be hurtful for the for the fabric, but if your clothes are continuously being put on wire hanger, dry cleaner coming there, coming back, it can really damage your clothes. You can get these kind of really pointy shoulders as well. And I think that's something that people don't realize, and what we want to take care of our clothing, because the longer the clothing lasts, the more money we save, the better it is for the environment and all of these things. So wire hanger, really, really, I think. Be the lowest on the list for me. Oh, gosh, it's

So sorry that we've gone we kind of did a big bill to our favorite and then omitted to talk about one of the most important hangers. But I'm blaming Ingrid for that. So before we, before we finish a couple of really important things that we want to talk about, in terms of, if you're thinking, Do you know what I'd love to do that? You know I've decluttered my wardrobe. I've organized my wardrobe. I'm ready for hang swap. First things first, you need to know exactly how many you need. So you need to have done the work on your wardrobes first. Don't just go out willy nilly buying buying tons and tons of hangers without any kind of plan in place. You need to have a good idea of how many hangers you need. And honestly, in most of the wardrobes that we come across, it is hundreds and not 10s. These hangers come in 10s or maximum 25 normally, sometimes you get them in 50s if you buy them, but the from Amazon and stuff like that, 25 hangers is not going to cut it for anybody's wardrobe. You know, there might be a couple of people out there, but it's a rarity. Okay, most people need upwards of 100 150 hangers, honestly, and that's just for one Ward robe and no word of a lie. If you start counting, it's frightening, isn't it, Ingrid. And then if you think about everybody in your family, it can be hundreds of hangers. So this is something, if you're going to do it for the whole household, that you really need to factor in the budgetary constraints of that. So our recommendation is always, unless you decide that you want to spend, you know, 10s or hundreds of pounds on new hangers, which we think potentially is worth it, if we're being honest, and then you really need to think about phasing it in, or know what you're getting at if you haven't done your decluttering and you want to do that in the interim period, try and best guess it, and make sure that you can take those hangers back to the shop so you can go back, get more than you think that you need, but make sure that you can take them back if you don't open them. That's the best step. That's what we do quite often. Is it, as professional organizers, we'll buy more than we need, we'll hope for the best, and then hopefully, fingers crossed, the hangers will then go back that we don't

need. Yes. And if you're thinking to yourself, oh, I'm still not sure which hangers, have a look at the our little shop that we have on Amazon, because if you go to declutterhub.com and click on our shop, you can see which hangers you like. To get a bit of a feel for. Okay, what kind of money are we talking about here, we've put our favorite wooden and velford hangers, as far as I know, in our little shop. So have a look at that. So we have

to, you know, I want to say a little bit more about the shopping, because we do need to say that we do get what is it that we've got to say? We've got to, we've got to say that we earn commission from anything in our shop. But seriously, we've got a lot of, we we spend quite a lot of time and effort thinking about what goes into the shop. So we're not in the business of selling things to people that they don't need, and so we think very carefully about the things that go in that shop, right across the board, whether it's kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, got different types of products in there, and whether these are things that we consider to be useful, because there's so many organizing products out there, and so many that are a complete waste of time, and we are all about simplicity for the most part. So we will earn a small commission, but honestly, we will not be retiring on it. It will be like, if you buy 10 hangers, we might get like, naught point, naught naught, one pence. And so this is really more for you than it is for us, but it would be lovely if you're going to buy something, you bought from us, and we got no point, no, not 1% times 10 people, wouldn't it Ingrid, yeah,

yeah, definitely, definitely. So yeah, have a look at that. Check that out. And indeed, you probably want to face it in over time. Maybe you can do one wardrobe at a time, or one person in the family over time, and then go, Okay, I really like these types of hangers. Now I'm gonna swap them over, right?
