If you love your makeup, chances are there are things in your makeup supplies taking up valuable space that you no longer need. Today we are going to talk about 10 things you can declutter from your make up bag and they are probably things you’ve never even thought of.

Ingrid: Now, Lesley, this week it's a 10 things. We like a 10 things. We do enjoy them so much. So I'm excited about this one because we've come up with some really interesting suggestions, haven't we? 

Lesley: I know cause it would be, you know, really when you think 10 things that you could declutter your makeup, I'm sure everybody here can think of 10 things that they could declutter from their makeup easily. So we've tried to go a little bit deeper, things that you might not have thought about as always. Now it's fair to say Ingrid, because you and I are on screen all the time, makeup is definitely part of our lives, isn't it?

Ingrid: That is very much true, Lesley and I think ever since we've worked for the Declutter Hub together, I've never used so much makeup in my life. 

Lesley: Exactly, exactly. Yeah. I'm going through a rate of knots and and that, yeah, exactly. It's never enough. Like every week there's more makeup to buy, to, to paste over my wrinkled old face to make us like camera ready. But what that brings along with it is little. If you buy makeup all the time, it brings along things that you think, oh, that's a great idea, and you buy things, and all that kind of stuff. So we're gonna talk about some things that might have been hanging around for a while that maybe you thought were a great idea and they're not such a great idea and they might be able to go. So let's go started, Ingrid, with number one. 

Ingrid: Yes. Number one are brushes from a brush set that you've never used, so maybe you've bought a brush set yourself, maybe it was a gift or a birthday or a holiday or whatever, and you get this beautiful package with all these different brushes and then there's like six and you use two, but what do you do with the rest?

Lesley: I know it's an interesting one really, because you've really got to be quite on top of brush sets because what typically happens is that you get a brush set and it explains on the outside, this is for foundation and this is for eye lining, and this is for whatever, like cream makeup or whatever. Take it out of the packet and then you completely forget what they were all for and then you're just randomly kind of making it up.

I know there are some people who were completely on top of the makeup and would know exactly what every brush was for, but I am not one of those people, so I've got got random brushes around that kind of. Go, yeah, that might work for this. And then you get a big splodge of eyeshadow cause you lipliner brush because they were all designed for different things for fine work and stuff. And so some of the brushes, to be fair, I think it's Bobbi Brown brushes that I've got some Bobbi Brown ones, I think they write on it. It says on the brush what it's for, which is very helpful. Very helpful.

Ingrid: If you're listening to this makeup brush people, you need to put on the brush what they're for because it's actually very helpful. It's like a label on a box. It's like a text on a brush. Thank you, Lesley. 

Lesley: I know, but that would be hard though. I think you'd have to write it on with like how, because they're very thin. How are you gonna write that on? 

Ingrid: So that's why we need to tell the makeup people who designed the brushes, To do what you just said they need to do and put it on the brush itself. That's very helpful. 

Lesley: It's very helpful. But I must admit, I have got a load of brushes that I'm not, that I, I've got no idea what they're for. So what I'm thinking is, if we're thinking about things that can go, maybe we need to bite the bullet and let 'em go. 

Ingrid: Yes, exactly. I mean, but that's a good thing anyway. If you don't use it, if it's just cluttering up your makeup supplies, declutter it, including brushes that you never use because what's the point? 

Lesley: I think the problem is that we all think the thing is about makeup. You know, it's quite transformational, isn't it? I mean, it's not quite as transformational as I would like it to be, to be honest. I feel like I might need to go down the plastic surgery route for that. But it does help. It does help when you get into a certain age, I'm not gonna lie. It does definitely help. Yeah. I, I don't go out of the house without makeup ever. I'm not gonna lie. Like, too scary. I even scare myself cuz we are on Zoom all the time. If I come on without makeup, but you scare yourself, you know what I mean? I have to put makeup on. Sorry, what? I'm getting all giddy now. I can't even think of what I was supposed to say, , but basically what I was trying to say was that when you buy these things, you think that they're gonna make you look better. So we're buying into the idea, aren't we, that a certain style of brush is gonna think that we're gonna put our makeup in in a certain way that's gonna make us look even more amazing than we do already. Ingrid . 

Ingrid: Speak for yourself, Leslie. I'm actually, now while we're talking, I'm like, I need to go on a makeup course. I got no idea what I'm doing here.

Lesley: Yeah, exactly. But anyway, so that's what I'm thinking. We kind of, it's aspirational. These makeup items are aspirational. We, we think they are gonna change the way we look and sometimes they do. But I think when you get to our age, you are really stuck in a rut, aren't you?. 

Ingrid: Yeah. 

Lesley: You are stuck in a rut, you know? It takes a brave person not to be stuck in a ru our age. I might be speaking out of turn and there's loads of people who are like, I'm changing things up all the time, but me and you we're definitely stuck in a rut. That's, yeah, that's true.

Ingrid: I think I found our next team building activity, Leslie, to have a makeup course together.

Lesley: Yes. Can you imagine how amazing that we would look after that ? Yes. Let's do that. Let's do that. Yeah. Right. Okay. I have another one. 

Ingrid: Yeah, we we're never gonna get through these 10 things if we talk, if we're gonna talk about like this all the time. Now let's go to number two. Go for it. 

Lesley: Number two. Right. One of the fantastic things that's happened more recently in the past, I don't, I'm gonna say two or three years, is that makeup brands have startedto realise that there is a lot of packaging that comes along with makeup, little pots, little lipstick containers, mascara wand things, whatever they're called. And so they've introduced recycling schemes, right. And quite often what they do, it, it's kind of wrapped up in a loyalty scheme, isn't it? So you, I think it might be Mac that does one where you get five pots or something. And when you take it back, you can get a free something or a loyalty points or something like that. So they encourage you to keep the pots and to recycle them. Now what I see quite often is loads and loads of these pots that they're never getting taken back to the point of recycling. So that's a great one to declutter is. If you are part of a recycling scheme and you're gathering parts along the way, put it in your diary to take those things back, and that's a fantastic way of decluttering, saving the environment, saving yourself some money, all wrapped up in one. 

Ingrid: I think it's great. I mean, because I, I've. Indeed. A couple years ago, I found one in the Body Shop where you can just, nobody was really doing it, but the Body Shop I think was one of the first ones that you could do it. And then of course, through Covid and stuff, they stopped all these schemes. So it was like I finally found like a good like place, and then it was like, oh, what are you gonna do now? And then a while back I was in boots and they now also have one of those big containers, like any makeup container. So I now got a little next to my donation station. I've got a little gathering place for like empty batteries and, and light bulbs that no longer work that you need to put in a specific place and small electricals. And now I've also got little pots for like makeup things because. I don't even, maybe don't, I know about the Mac scheme and I should use it because I actually use Mac, but I, I just like, as long as it goes being recycled, I'm happy already.

Yeah. So, yeah. Great. Fantastic. Number two, Lesley. So let's go to number three then. And that's a good one as well because this, these are the palette that you get with like different eyeshadows and blushes and base colors and highlighters, and again, this is a bit like the brush thing. You use some of them but not others because you might not like the color or you might not like the thing what it's for. You've got some other product that you use instead. So you have these pallets with some of them, the little things that are completely empty, scraped down to the last little thing, and the others are full. And we kind of hang on to them, don't we?. 

Lesley: Yeah. Cause again, we think we're miraculously gonna wake up one day and decide that we're gonna use a dark purple eyeshadow when we've never used any dark purple for the last 20 years.

And so it's things like that. And I think, I think the key to that perhaps, and something that I've been doing more recently is not buying pallets at all , because I do stick to two or three colors, if I'm really honest. The problem is there's like a cost efficiency, I guess, with the palette isn't there? And so, they might be six or nine or some like Morphe palette and stuff have got like 20 colors in them and so, but somehow it's much more cost effective to buy the whole palette but then we keep hold of a pallette where we haven't used 17 out of 20 colors because we think that we might at some point, and what happens is that these things then go out of date and stuff. So it's all about biting the bullet really, and, and being realistic and going, do you know what? I'm not gonna use that dark purple. 

Ingrid: Mm-hmm. What happens a lot as well Lesley, is that you get a palette as a free gift. 

Lesley: Who gets a pallet as a free gift? 

Ingrid: I did, I did a while back.

Lesley: The whole pallete?

Ingrid: Yeah. And it's so nice. Because the, the lady from the shop said it was boots and she said, oh, we got a free pallet with like a, not like 25 things, but like a really nice washer and four eyeshadows. And, and I'm like, no, no, no. She's like, it's really nice. They're like, but they're always colors normally that nobody wants. And she said, have a look and I went oh my gosh. I'll have that freebie. And normally I'll always stay away from the freebies. You know me, I'm like, no, no, no. But this one I'm like so happy with it. I'm actually using it . 

Lesley: Nice. I know. We need to all pop along boots and get the free palette. But that'll be gone. Which takes us nicely onto our next thing. You were talking about free gifts, right? And this is a big problem really, isn't it, when it comes to makeup, because. We go out with all good intention to buy what we want to buy, and we are swayed by the pricing on pallets. We are swayed by this lady that Ingrid saw in Boots saying, why don't you get, and if you get one more item, then you can get this fantastic free gift. And so we go out and we buy things that we don't, we didn't intend to buy, but we do it because it makes financial sense in, in, in, in a way, doesn't it? We're like, well, it would, we would be foolish not to because I buy one more thing and then I get five more things. And so, but one of the things that you always get, so there's loads of things in those free gifts, and we can talk about that later. But one of the things that you get all the time is you always pretty much get a new makeup bag, branded makeup bag. They're not stupid, are they? They're gi gi giving you a branded bag. So that brand is always front of mind. But what what happens then is you've got tons of makeup bags, right, that are free. 

Ingrid: Loads. We find them everywhere. Not, you know, in bathrooms, in bedrooms with toiletries, with makeup, you know, random drawers in the spare bedroom. You're like, oh, what's it, oh, those are my makeup bags. I'm like, how many does a person needs? Because they really, it's like they, they come from everywhere. 

Lesley: Yeah, definitely. So I, so I think it's time to look at those makeup bags, cuz you typically do have, if you go away and use a makeup bag, you do have one normally that you know is gonna always do the job. And typically it's not a free one. It's quite often one that you've bought purpose, you know, on purpose. And that's the one that you use repeatedly. I've got, I've got toiletries bags and makeup bags that I always take in holiday with me.. I've got two just because they're the right size and they fit everything in.

Ingrid: Yeah. 

Lesley: And so, so I would never go to the free Estee Lauder one or the free whatever one, because I would always go back to my trusty favorites. Yeah. And so what we're saying is declutter those makeup bags, even though they're branded, they can definitely go to a charity shop because somebody will use them. So don't worry about that. Or you can also find other purposes for them. Maybe, you know, in your stationery drawers, sometimes bags are quite useful in things like that. They're quite useful for little bits of electricals, you know, to keep wires together. There's only a certain number of things that you can use makeup bags for really. Cause they're a bit awkward, aren't they? But there are some that do work well? And those are a couple of examples. 

Ingrid: Yeah. Great. No, great idea. Let's go on to number five then. Lesley. These were, we, we called them gizmos and gadgets. Gizmos and gadgets. So what, where do we wanna go with, with this one, Lesley?

Lesley: Yeah. Again, it's along the same lines as that you want to buy something that's going to suddenly turn you into a supermodel, I think. So we see something highlighted, like, you know, eyelash curlers is probably not a great example, but maybe you decided, you know what, I'm gonna start wearing full eyelashes or something.

And then there's like an implement to put them on with like a, I don't know, a thing that you stick out. I've never really got on with false eyelashes to be fair. I just don't think I could ever do, I could ever, I have had them put on once. And they're great, but I've never put 'em on myself. Cause I just think, you know, I'd see too many people walking around Manchester at two o'clock in the morning with half an eyelash off. I don't think that would be me. You know what I mean? . But anyway, so yeah, I think, you know, gizmos and gadgets that you bought again, that you think are gonna change the way you do your makeup. You try them once or twice, you don't get along with them and then they hang around.

Ingrid: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I love it, Lesley. I'm, I'm trying to think of a gizmo or gadget, but I'm like you, I'm, that would be far too fiddly for me. I don't think I've got anything like that in my house because I just thought, oh, I just can't. Oh, with my eyes, I'm just a bit careful like that. I don't know. Anyway, let's go for a break and let's give you some more things to declutter because we're only halfway through. So five more to go. See you after the break.

Hello everyone. Welcome back to your 10 things to declutter from your makeup supplies. We've done five before the break. We've got five more to go. Lesley, what is our number six? 

Lesley: I think sometimes, and you talked about this before where you, when you got your nice little palette that you absolutely love, I think it's fair to say, and we alluded to this before, that quite often when you get a free sample, you don't love it because it is probably. I, I mean, I don't know. It would be really interesting to talk to somebody who's from a makeup marketing company, what do they do with those samples? Do they give you things because they feel that you're gonna love them and buy them, or do they give you things that they can't get rid of? Do you know what I mean? I, I suspect it might be a combination of both actually. So some of them are trying to entice you into buy-in, and some of them are kind of additional surplus stock. And I think that the surplus stock ones are the ones that we're gonna talk about really. So I got one last week from some lipsticks that I got thrown in. I used Dior foundation and they gave me like a little palette with like four lipsticks in. And none of those colors I would they were just the wrong shades for me. But you kind of feel obliged, don't you? So I kind of took it along. I put it in my, in my makeup bag when I went to London and I'm like, I'm never gonna wear that color. I buy lipsticks that are a certain color that I want to get. I'm not gonna suddenly change things up because I'm stuck in a rut. And so I think it might be different if you're not stuck in a rut, but I feel like I am. So I think if you make a decision that you're never gonna wear that color, It's time to let it go straight away.

Ingrid: I know exactly what you mean. I once got a blue mascara as a freebie, I mean, what's, what's that all about? We did that back in the eighties, didn't we? Blue mascara. 

Lesley: I know and I think, you know, like, I don't know whether Leah would wear a blue mascara, but you know, I think you we're just a bit old for blue mascara maybe. Is that it? Yeah. Is that what you saying? 

Ingrid: I think so. I think so. 

Lesley: Not that we're being ageist here. If you wanna wear blue mascara or you go for it for it. I'm a, I'm a black all the way gal . 

Ingrid: Yeah, I do dark, indeed, dark brown or black and blue mascara, I think is, is is beyond me now. I think we, we've, we are way past that station. Let's go on to number seven.

Lesley: Yeah. Number seven. We're gonna start talking about kind of hygiene now, aren't we? I think it's fair to say that in makeup bags, sometimes hygiene is not at the top of people's minds. You know, keeping on top if you wear makeup all the time, keeping on top of cleaning brushes and all that kind of stuff.

It kind of slips down a little bit and it certainly does for me. And so I know that there are, sometimes we see, cause I think when we come into people's houses and do makeup, which we do all the time when we're decluttering, I think sometimes we see things that you're like, Ugh, that's quite grim. But when you, when it's your own, not on your own face, you kind of make your own decisions. So we can see it with a little fresh pair of eyes and go, I think it's time for that sponge applicator, because they are, you know, if you go onto YouTube, this sounds really great. Have you ever been onto YouTube or those viral videos that come out and they open up the sponge and there's like, like animals, like living inside them. Have you ever seen that? 

Ingrid: No. Lelsey, I don't want to. La la la la la. I don't want to know this. 

Lesley: I know cause they're kind like buried inside these sponges. I think since I've seen that on YouTube or whatever it was, I think I'm just completely paranoid and so never keep those sponge applicators for very long at all. But we need to be mindful that there might be animals growing in your sponge applicator. 

Ingrid: Ingrid stops the podcast to now go and put her brushes into some cleaning stuff.

Lesley: Exactly. You've gotta be careful. So I think it's time. Things like sponge applicators. I think they just need to get thrown away after a certain time brushes can be cleaned sponge applicators, you kind of can put 'em through the washing machine, I think a little bit, but then I think they break down a little bit. So there's certain things in your makeup bag that after a certain amount of time, need to go. 

Ingrid: Yes, exactly. Exactly. And Lesley, you had a really good number eight as well, that I completely agree with, but I hadn't, hadn't clocked that one yet. I love your number eight. 

Lesley: So it's not really a decluttering one, it's kind of a thinking about how to do things a little bit different one. So basically, this is my daughter, so she's quite sustainable as a lot of younger people are a little bit ahead of the game. Than we are perhaps sometimes. And so, and they're up to date with things that happen. So she doesn't use cotton pads to take her makeup off anymore. She uses reusable cotton pads that then have a little bag. I think some of them are made out of bamboo, but they're like cotton pads. They look like a normal cotton pad. And they have a, a surface that's similar to a cotton wool pad. But then once you've taken your makeup off, then you put them into a little bag and you put 'em in the wash and so you just wash them and you have a constant throughput. So what that means is that you're taking out cotton wool out of waste, because that's gonna go straight into landfill, isn't it? 

Ingrid: Yeah. Yeah. 

Lesley: Yeah, so, you know, explore the opportunity. You're not gonna declutter them cause you're gonna use them all up, but use all the cotton pads up that you've got at the moment and think about switching into something more sustainable or reusable. I think they're fantastic. 

Ingrid: What a great idea. I, I, I don't come a lot in shops, so maybe that's why I haven't clocked that yet, that it's an option. But I'm definitely gonna investigate and see if that's something, because I mean, I use two cotton pads per day. So I mean, if I can, you know, be more sustainable, I mean that's definitely something to look into, I think.

Lesley: Yeah, definitely. The only thing that I would say is that it's quite hard to get the makeup out. Do you know what I mean? Cause you'd really need to, it kind of comes out, so I think it's good enough, you know what I mean? Cause I don't think it needs to be white, do you know what I mean, when it comes out. But you can still see the residue of the color of the makeup when it comes out, unless you were to do it in like a 90 degree wash. And then that kind of almost counteracts the sustainability side of it a little bit . So, so I, we, we just go with it. It's good enough, you know, it's still gonna have some makeup staining on it, but it's fine. But yeah, sustainability, it's not really a decluttering one, but it's decluttering an idea and bringing something new in

Ingrid: I love it. I love it.

Lesley: Number nine when we thought about this one, Lesley, made me actually laugh because I've actually done this . So Lesley said, well, you know what we also need to put on the list is when people have got like nearly empty containers. But there's still a little bit left in it, but they start the new one because they're maybe in a rush or a hurry and they can't bother to fit.

Ingrid: You know, try and squeeze out the last little bit out of that concealer little jar or bottle. And then suddenly you've got two or three little empties. Now, I don't have two or three, but this exactly happened to me the other day when I thought the concealer of the, the makeup what do you call that? Like... 

Lesley: Foundation? 

Ingrid: Foundation. The foundation is nearly empty, and I thought it was like emptier than it actually was. So I started the new one. So I'm like, guilty as judged here for this one. 

Lesley: Ingrid, Ingrid. So I, I think, I think this is where. Plastic content, plastic kind of ones that are not rigid, you know what I mean? Yeah. Ones that you can squeeze like tubes. Yeah. Yeah. They're better cuz you can chop the top off the tube and you can kind of put your finger in or put the make a, I don't know, something in and you can brush maybe and you can get the last residue out. Cause it's expensive. It's expensive. But if you've got a glass container, it's much more difficult to do that. And so you do leave a lot of residue. So, but yeah, we have this thing where we go, I'm gonna go back to that at some point. And particularly if we go away, like I, I did it as well last week cause I was going from here, I was going down to London for a week and I knew that there wasn't enough in my foundation in that part to last minute. I knew there was a little bit, maybe a couple of applications, but not enough for a week, and so I left it and now I've got two. But yeah, but mine is a glass part, which is good because it's glass and it can be recycled, but it's not good because I can't get the last bit out. It's tricky, isn't it? It's tricky. 

Ingrid: I think mainly Lesley, because it is expensive. 

Lesley: Yeah, really expensive. 

Ingrid: That's why we're so much here in the Declutter Hub about finishing what you have, use up what you have. Don't get tempted to buy new, especially with makeup. I mean, there's lots, there's other things in the house as well but especially makeup. It's really like, You know, before you know it, 12 pound, 20 pound, eight pound, it really adds up. So you want to really finish it all off and not throw anything away if you can because yeah.

Lesley: It's definitely worth it when you look the way that we do at the end of it Ingrid.

Ingrid: That's the Zoom filter, Lesley, obviously to be honest with everyone, that's the Zoom filter. We're so happy with the filter. 

Lesley: I was actually joking, I was joking. Ingrid takes me at face value every time. Anyway. 

Ingrid: Yeah. Right. We've got one more for you in this. 

Lesley: Would you ever do a podcast without makeup on? 

Ingrid: No.

Lesley: Exactly. Yeah, that much is clear. I don't even leave the house, nevermind do a podcast broadcast to the world. That would not be a good thing anyway. 

Ingrid: Yes, number 10. Fancy dress face paints that have been hanging around in your home for years because you might only use it once per year for Halloween or for a special occasion, or maybe St. Patrick's Day or something. Or maybe when there's the World Cup going on or the whatever it is. If you don't use face paints all the time. Ooh. You kind of want to have a look at that. I think. 

Lesley: Yeah. Cause they've probably only got six months or 12 months life on them, haven't they? And if you're only using 'em on an occasional basis, then it's time to probably let them go. And sadly you probably need to get new, new face paints every season if we're gonna go down the hygiene route. Now some people will have a different idea about hygiene and about how long you can keep these things. And it's all about the sensitivity of your skin, I think, you know. Some people will keep face paints for 10 years and be perfectly fine with them. Other people are less fine with them. But we just want to alert you to the fact that quite often we see face paints hanging around people's houses often in like fancy dress boxes and things like that, aren't they? Rather than in standard makeup, but sometimes they are in standard makeup as well. It depends how often you are doing fancy dress makeup, but yeah. That's our number 10 little bit left field, Ingrid. 

Ingrid: I know, I, I, I really, first of all, I love our 10 things podcast, but secondly, I must admit I've really enjoyed talking about this. I thought, I think we've put a really good list together, we could have just said, yeah, declutter all of your old lipsticks and mascaras that are over six months old, but we thought let's give it a different twist.
